SkyView 1
Greetings, I am in the market for a milled AK. According to my research, the VEPRs are high quality AKs but do not accept standard Hi Cap mags. Do you know of any enterprising person or company that produce modified mags for the VEPR? Thanks In Advance, Ken

SkyView 1
Thanks for the education ... I assumed the RPK receiver was milled rather than stamped. Would I better served buying a MAK-90 which already accepts Hi-Cap mags?
Shandlanos 1,470
The RPK receivers are made with substantially thicker stamped sheet metal than most AKM rifles. It depends what you're looking for. If you want a brand new rifle, a NIB MAK-90 will probably not come cheap, if you can find one. If you buy one used, you should be able to find a reasonable price, in line with a new VEPR, give or take. Finding a buttstock that will fit the MAK-90 could be a bit of challenge. Similar to the VEPR, the factory rifle has a proprietary slant cut and will not accept standard buttstocks intended for milled or stamped guns, and comes with a thumbhole stock. I believe ironwood designs makes a replacement stock.
hutchsaiga 93
May I ask why you are looking for a milled ak? Is It to add to a collection? Or becuase you've been misled into thinking they are someway superior to a quality stamped rifle?
shades_of_grey 1,092
But hutch, they're heavier, so they gotta be superior, right? Milling AK receivers was just a stop-gap measure used for a few years before they figured out how to properly produce stamped receivers. They were not part of the original design and are entirely unnecessary.
SkyView 1
I am interested in a milled for its "potential" higher resale value. With that said, I have located a NIB MAK-90 for $800.00. Would this be a better investment than a new $650.00 VEPR? Yes, I know these are not milled. Thanks
