The disconnector grabs the hammer while the trigger is pulled so that you dont have a slamfire condition arise. It releases the hammer when you release the trigger, which is then caught on the trigger hook.

 

That is how your rifle/shotgun is "semi auto" and not "pseudo full auto slamfire dangerous blow up in your face shrapnel when it fires out of battery ouchies dont do that blind in one eye". :eek:

A full auto rifle will usually have a full-auto disconnect that lets the hammer go at the proper time. This is triggered by the bolt carrier moving past the point where the bolt is fully locked.

 

Disabling the disconnector, as Indy put it so well, is dangerous and while it might resemble full auto, make no mistake that it is not deliberately firing full auto but instead causing a dangerous malfunction.
