jmeck 12
I built this Saiga about 2 years ago but felt the hand guard was too bulky looking. I milled most of the tac rails off, shortened the gas tube cover, and made a foldable pistol grip. Its still not exactly what I want, a little to heavy. But it was an entertaining project. Being I don't own a lathe I learned how to turn aluminum bar stock on a milling machine to make the pistol grip.

jmeck 12
Pretty cool! The lower is a UTG? The whole hand guard is UTG (I think, maybe a different brand, can't remember for sure.) the upper part normally runs the full length of the gas tube but I cut it in half and moved it back to the rear sight block. I couldn't find a folding hand grip that I liked, they all stick out so far when folded. I've had this idea for a while and finally found the time to try it a couple of weeks ago. I might try making one with a short length hand guard.
SgtRaven 531
It is certainly novel idea, running along the boundaries-pushing lines, and why not? I might not like it to the point of adopting it, but it deserves the recognition for the effort and a rep point. (And someone can take very decent pictures to illustrate the point). Good job! Keep going.

This guy has the best price on a Saiga handguard of anyone out there. http://www.ebay.com/itm/271176137273?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
pyzik 597
Wow! That's cheap. Gonna order one. Can I use just the lower if I want? How do they attach? I cut off the Saiga lower handguard retaining pins...

Do you think something could be used as a brace, between the barrel and the gas tube so that the upper portion does not have to be used? Thanks!

You might be able to thread a couple of 1/4 inch wide hose clamps through some of the holes in the lower half, then up and around the barrel. If you paint them black they won't stick out so much. I think the way I'd do it is to get a small piece of sheet metal and make 2 bands that could go around the gas tube and screw down tight using the stock upper screws and holes in the lower. pyzik 597
That's almost exactly what I was thinking.
