Rhodes1968 1,638
Seems deciding on a rifle in Russia is just as convoluted as it has been here. The AK-12 got the nod because ... politics. Wow what a surprise. Shades of Robert McNamara
forsaken352 235
This is apparently the rifle the AK-12 beat. Interesting. Almost seems like they were using a few HK-like designs in developing it.
metalgodlb 30
lol forsaken, that's putting it lightly. No mistaking that lower for anything else
Shandlanos 1,470
Yup, that sure looks like an MP5 or a G3 had a baby with an AKM. Why the fuck the mags are still rock and lock I do not understand.
XD45 7,124
Rock-n-lock is a good design for average soldiers. It's easier to know the mag is locked, especially with a full mag on a closed bolt.
Rhodes1968 1,638
Rock and lock keeps crap out of the works better. AK isnt the only mag fed military rifle that used it, for instance the last true MBR issued to US troops did as well.
BigChongus 765
Sooooooo, this means the surplus 74 mags should still be a thing at some point in the future, right? Hopefully we start getting some of the sanitized "Bulgarian" mags again.
mancat 2,368
They use the same mags, and I don't see any 74 surplus being dumped on us with the way things have been going.
BigChongus 765
They use the same mags Yeah and they're the same ones they've been using and we've still gotten surplus. I don't see why we wouldn't see some old surplus on the market passed off as sanitized Bulgies in the future (not in the near future though). My point is that the mags won't be obsolete. Shandlanos 1,470
Interesting that they're also buying new AK-103s. I guess they've decided 7.62x39 still has a valid place on the modern battlefield.A little strange that they'd choose to field two assault rifle cartridges.
mancat 2,368
It has still been in use for some time, especially police/security forces from what I've read. Still seeing many AKMs being used by actual Russian mil in Ukraine (not the "rebels"), particularly those with PBS suppressor. 5.45x39 doesn't really work well at subsonic speeds. Russia does have subsonic 7.62x39 loads just for this purpose - some ammo collectors have scooped up a few boxes of these over the years.

Almost seems like they were using a few HK-like designs in developing it. Actually the Russians copied a lot of features from the US military wih the rails on the handguards and scope. They also improved the ergonomics on a proven AK platform and added better iron sights.
