  1. Well I finally got my RSA FCG and installed it in my Saiga. There's just one more issue: The FCG cutout in the Saiga's receiver is approximately 0.080" too wide (0.710" verses about 0.630") This allows the FCG to move from side-to-side, which can cause the hammer arm to collide with the trigger hook. Folks would have seen this with the Tapco G2 as well, since the G2 and RSA triggers are almost the exact same width. Has anyone else seen this? What's the solution? thanks in advance, Larry Here's a photo of the Saiga with the RSA FCG installed: For comparison, here's
  2. I just got done talking to him on the phone. He said that the "VEPR 308 FCG" is used for converted Saiga 308's. He also said that most of the time the hammer will just work with the OEM BHO, but that occasionally some narrowing may be required. I've hear good things about RSA, so I went ahead and put on on order . . . Thanks for all the help! Larry
  3. Here's a couple more posts I found: http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showto...03&st=0&p=14598 http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showto...408entry14408 Larry
  4. I'm in the process of converting my Saiga 308-1. I have a Tapco G2 FCG, but I'm thinking maybe the Red Star Arms FCG would be better. I'm trying to figure out which of the of the seven different AK triggers from their website I would order. (If it makes any difference, I would like to continue to utilize the factory BHO.) Thanks in advance, Larry PS: For more info on my experience with the Tapco G2, click here.
  5. I guess I've never seen the tutorials . . . got links? Here's the one I found : http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=1903, but I would appreciate any others you might have. In my board searches, I also found out about the need to grind the hammer. I also find references that indicate that the RSA hammer doesn't need to be ground, and that comes with a Wolf disconnector spring (http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showto...94&st=0&p=50372). thanks, Larry
  6. This is not good . . . I'm part way through converting my Saiga 308 . . . I'm trying to use a Tapco G2 FCG, and having all sorts of unexpected issues: 1) The Tapco disconnector has a hole for the spring which is too small for the OEM Saiga disconnector spring . . . OK, so I bought another spring. Still this seems "not quite right", what gives? 2) The Tapco hammer is wider than the original. It seems to work fine w/o the BHO . . . what do I need to do to make the Tapco hammer work with the BHO? 3) It seems like the front of the Tapco trigger seems to catch on the factory cut r
  7. When I build my AMD-65 kit, the disconnector spring that came with the kit worked fine in the Tapco FCG I purchased . . . Now I'm working on "converting" my Saiga .308. However, the Saiga's disconnector spring is to large to fit into the Tapco FCG's disconnector. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so what did you do to solve it? thanks in advance, Larry
  8. Ok, I keep getting conflicting answers . . . I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I am trying to get this straight: 1) Why would adding a thumbhole stock to a low-cap Saiga result in a rifle that's any different (legally speaking) then a low-cap thumbhole WASR? Is it because where a few hi-cap Saiga mags sold? 2) Some folks keep insisting that it's two parts. Do you know of any ATF reference letters posted on this subject? thanks again, Larry
  9. OK, does antbody know the answer to this one: I'm going to move the trigger forward on my Saiga 308 and swap the existing Monte Carlo stock an imported thumbhole stock from an SA-85. That's all, no hig-cap conversion, etc. 1) Do I need to make the rifle 922® complient? 2) How many parts does the imported thumbhole stock get counted as: One (buttstock) or two (buttstock & pistol grip)? thanks in advance, Larry
  10. The set screw in that trigger diagram has always made me a little nervious . . . Larry
  11. Questions: Have you actually ever seen 922® used this way? Is there anyplace this sort of thing is documented? Larry
  12. I had considered cutting my reciever, but I can't seem to find a ROMAK 3 stock -- and even then, it would be too short. I was on the verge of aborting my Saiga conversion until I emailed Ironwood. But I'll have to wait an see what they come up with. I traded several emails with them, and it seems that the stock they have planned isn't quite as "stylish" as the ROMAK. Larry
  13. Indy, Sorry about that, but I don't frequent the board here often enough to know who's rifle is who's. So YES, I've seen both of these pics before. And more to the point, I actually own both the stocks shown . . . LOL I guess I'm frustrated! I see folks selling all kinds of AK stocks, but nothing that's exactly what I'm looking for -- a wood Dragunov-style stock for my Saiga project that actually "feels good" . . . Larry PS: Ironwood Designs is saying that they will be offering a wood Drag stock like I'm looking for in the next several months.
  14. I'm looking at the same two stocks for my Saiga conversion. The WASR stock looks better, but the Chinese thumbhole feels a lot better. Ideally, I would love to usa a Romak style stock, but that would involve cutting the reciever . . . not something I feel very comfortable about doing. OTOH, I was thinking about trimming the PG on the WASR stock. Has anyone here tried doing that? Larry

  16. That actually is the stock I ordered today. As far as I know, no it wil not fit without doing the trigger conversion. I believe that is a Romanian Romak II butt stock. Let us all know if it mates up to the Saiga reciever and tang . . . Larry
  17. I'm not so sure . . . My other monte carlo stocked rifles don't pull that way (even the com-bloc ones like the SKS). I don't own one, but I'm told the Saiga .223's and 7.62x39's have some sort of linkage that allows the trigger to pull straight back. It seems kinda odd that the .308 is the only one that has the "weird trigger". Larry
  18. I ordered up ten of these as well . . .
  19. Thanks! I ordered up one of the ones from e-gunparts. Looks like I'll be ordering up a gas piston . . . Larry
  20. I hate the Saiga.308's trigger, so the motivation is to move the trigger forward. I'm trying to find a stock that doesn't have a PG (to many weird looks at the range . . . sigh) and is made out of wood to match the look of the handguard. Larry
  21. This is more or less what I'm looking for . . . of course the photo is from the Ishmansh web site. I wonder if there's any chance of getting one . . . ? Larry
  22. I'm told that the "real" Romak stocks are a little short for US shooters. I was sort of hoping that someone out there knew about wood US-made stock in that style. Larry PS: I gues I could always get one and try it . . . but them I would be one compliance part short
  23. OK, so I've taken the plunge: I ordered my Saiga .308 "project gun" today. I plan an replacing the required number of parts, moving the trigger, and adding a wooden thumbhole stock something like the Romak3's. Two questions: 1) Where can I buy a stock like I'm looking for? 2) What are the ins and outs of mounting it? (tang and trunion issues, etc.) thanks in advance, Larry
