Most effective muzzle brake for taming recoil?
imarangemaster replied to Sirex's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
I'm going on 63 years old, and am VERY old school. Until very recently, I had not been a "fanboy" of muzzle brakes at all. Flash Hiders I learned to appreciate in the military in the early to mid-1970s. Fast forward to recent times, however, I went through a change in attitude. A couple years ago, I built a .300 Blackout M4gery for a domestic security contract I had in the mountains, patrol power infrastructure and hydro dams. The 300 BLK has decidedly more kick than a 5.56 in a similar build. I decided to try the Tri-Delta Tactical brake (like I have on my Saiga now). That, along with a -
Most effective muzzle brake for taming recoil?

Another thing you might do along with the Tri-delta brake I have, I used a vented Chicom gas tube (you can use East German or Bulgarian vented ones, also) which compensates for AKs tendency to be over-gassed, and a recoil buffer from Buffer Technologies. Between the three, I honestly feel that my felt recoil is probably less than half of the stock Saiga! -
Tapco G2 conversion, trigger is sticky on first pull
imarangemaster replied to txoutback's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
Mine Tapco G2 double hook is slick at 2.5 pounds without a trigger job, and that's with the factory linkage. In my experience, Tapco G2s don't need trigger jobs.... -

Tapco G2 conversion, trigger is sticky on first pull

Lube it up and dry fire it. Did you move trigger, or do the factory style FCG conversion? -
I replaced my Saiga gas piston (which had zero wiggle) with a Tapco for 922R. I screwed it in tight, then backed out between 1/8 and 1/4 turn. I then drilled and riveted it. It has some wiggle, but not a huge amount. It works great.

Most effective muzzle brake for taming recoil?

AMD brakes a really cool, but your shooting neighbors (and the guys down the road) will hate you. I think they actually amplify sound (not really, it it sure seems like it.)! I haveNEVER heard anything louder on an AK than an AMD65 brake. I had one on a Saiga, but got rid of it! -
Most effective muzzle brake for taming recoil?

I tried the M16A1 style. It was an awesome flash hider. The Krebs may work well as both MB and FH. My favorite, though, is still the Tactical Tri-Delta brake. With it and a Buffer technologies recoil buffer, it shoots really smooth. I know some folks pooh-pooh recoil buffers on AKs, saying "it wasn't designed with one by Kalashnikov, so it doesn't need it." maybe it doesn't need it, but why beat it up. FALs, G3/HK91s, ARs, all have rubber recoil buffers for a reason. It helps lessen wear and tear on the weapon.. -
I run a buffer in my IZ132, with no issues. Why beat up a weapon, if you do not need to. On a prior Saiga, I used a buffer over the course of about 7 or 8 thousand rounds with mil-surp Com bloc steel mags and and a variety of ammo. Zero malfunctions. ARs have buffers, FALs have buffers, and HK G3/94s have buffers. The only problem I had with a buffer is when I put one in a Department UZI SMG in the 90s. It went from 650-700 RPM to an erratic 1100 RM! Sounded like a Mac 10!

I have the tapco one still. Interested? Make you a heck of a deal. $30 delivered.

I actually have a Tapco handguard set for sale if any one wants it.

I did think that everyone here was an adult. Obviously I was mistaken.... How an asshole is relevant to a Saiga forum is beyond me, unless the person posting is .... oh never mind. We won't go there... The mods here are fairly liberal, but that is pushing the limit. I have seen people banned for less.

I am running a Buffer Technologies recoil buffer on my current 7.62x39 Saiga since the beginning, so no signs of wear on the trunnion. Prior Saigas (and other AKs) I had in the past, I didn't run buffers. After a few thousand rounds, you could see some marring on the Saigas, but no real deformation. I did have a WASR that was beat to piss after a 1,000 rounds, though. A folding stock Yugo M70 I had showed about the same marring as a Saiga. I suspect Russian Saiga steel is harder stuff (after all, it is rumored that they make their AKs from the armor grade steel from cut up German tanks.

I got mine about $4 to $5 apiece back in the 90s. -

The 122 HP is not 8M3. Only the 124 grain HP Tula marked "made at Ulyanovsk" is 8M3. The Herters/Tula 122 HP has less of a rounded ogive than the 124 HP/8M3, which also has deep "pre-fail" cuts inside the HP. BTW, Ammodepot.com has it for $4.77 a box again. I got 1,4000 rounds from them when it was $4.47 a box before the ban panic. http://www.ammunitiondepot.com/TulAmmo-7-62mm-x-39mm-124-Grain-Hollow-Point-Ammo-p/ul076204.htm -
10 Pack Steel Surplus Magazines (x39) for $79.99 Delivered
imarangemaster replied to SGL's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
WOW! That is one of the best deals I have seen in awhile. AmmoDepot.com had them for that a few months back. If you don't have steel mIl-surp mags in your kit, you should I have about 20 AK mags, of which 10 are steel with good springs and Tapco followers. As much as I like the Tapco smooth sides (probably the best of the non-steel re-enforced polymer mags), my "go to" mags for SHTF and EOTWAWKI. I have five loaded with 8M3 Sapsan "Fragtastics," and two loaded with Chinese steel core for harder targets. Four of the HP loaded mags and the two steel core loaded mags are in a Galati In -
My most recent Saiga had no wiggle at all from the factory. No problem at all.

Featureless Saiga redeux, final version.
imarangemaster replied to imarangemaster's topic in Saiga 7.62 X 39
The stock handguard with an aluminum liner actually works pretty well. I went out to BLM land today and did a 120 round mag dump - as fast as I could pull the trigger and change mags. The barrel was smoking (from the oil on it), but the handguard just got warn. Definitely an improvement. -
Well, after puttering and experimenting for the last couple months, I have arrived at the final version for my Kalifornistan compliant "Featureless" Saiga 7.62x39. Three things are the major changes. First change: Went back to the factory stock. K-Var Nato length ergonomics were not even close to factory. Besides, I like the feel. Much like my M1 Carbine. Second change:Originally, I was using only iron sights, not really being a red dot kind of guy. After trying and sighting in my vintage Tasco "Accu Point" 1X red dot, and seing it shoot 3 MOA with much easier target acquisition,

Filing the mag catch is easy. Just do a little at a time until it clicks on. Bullet guide is fairly easy too. Just a hand drill. Dinzag used to have a video. CSS and Dinzag sell parts. If you have to keep it stock, get a modified Tapco G2 from Dinzag. He does them for stock saigas. It makes a world of difference. Even with the stock linkage and trigger, the Tapco hammer, disconnector, and sear block give me a sweet 2.5 pound trigger pull. It is the second group down on this link: http://www.dinzagarms.com/misc_parts/fcg.html If CT allows pistol grips, the Saiga stock is be

I gave just under $600 out the door ($530 + $26 CA DROS+8% tax of $42) just before the ban from a local gunshop so that's not too bad. Yes there are other cheaper AKs that work just as well, but there is value in the fact a Saiga is a REAL Kalashnikov made by Izhmash on the current AK100 series platform. Saigas also tend to be twice as accurate as other AKs out there. I have gotten 2 to 3 MOA from every Saiga I have had. My current one gives me 3 MOA with a red dot, just leaning against a tree. Don't get hung up on "Restoring it" A factory configuration using modified Tapco FCG from
