Shooting, mountain biking, backpacking/hiking, shooting, and did I mention that I like blowing stuff up with my Saiga-12?
  1. I do not happen to have a camera handy to take a picture, but the bullet-guide is riveted in just like the military rifles (at least in the SGL21 7.62x39). An Arsenal rifle isn't exactly "just" a converted Saiga. The Arsenals come from Legion (Izhmash factory "custom shop") and have several features (such as the bullet-guide) that aren't found on standard Saiga rifles.
  2. Just an update on this question (for anybody who may be interested). I finished my conversion today and tried out the Hogue Monogrip to see how it would fit. It is close, however there is still a little play in the grip when it is fully tightened. It looks like the "well" in the top of the grip isn't quite deep enough for the grip to fully seat against the receiver. I think it would be easy to relieve the top of the grip with a dremel (just a 1/32" or so) and get it to fit pretty well. I already had a Tapco on hand and that is what I ended up doing to get the conversion finished.
  3. Got all my parts today and finished my conversion! Now I can't wait to go shoot it. Everything went together like a charm. This (my 1st conversion) isn't too fancy. I just used the Tapco AK buttstock / Saw grip and FCG/TG from Tromix. I'm planning on replacing the sights and upgrading the forearm (and maybe a flash hider ). I think I'm hooked.....
  4. Has anyone experimented with getting the Hogue Monogrip to "play nice" with the Tromix DIY trigger guard? I know the DIY is only designed to work with the Tapco grip, but I am going to try getting the Hogue to fit. If anyone out there has had any experience in that area I'd love to hear about it. Thanks
  5. So, last night I finally did it. I gritted my teeth, closed my eyes (well, maybe I peeked a little) and took the 18V Makita to the "extra" rivets in my receiver. So far the results are great! This is in no small part to all the great info I found on this forum. At this point it is completely stripped, the pins / welds etc are all drilled and the bottom of the receiver is repainted with some Rustoleum High Temp paint. I went by the hardware store and picked up the nylon hole plugs that everyone recommends (another great tip from this forum). After putting them in they look just l

  7. +1 on the BBQ Hi temp paint. Did mine recently and it came out great. Holding up well, too. Same here. I just touched-up the bottom of the receiver during my conversion with the Rustoleum 1200' Flat Black. Very close match to the rest of the weapon and so far seems to be durable enough. Someday I'd like to try out a full Duracoat job, but its more than good enough for now.
  8. I got out my stock S12, the Krebs conversion, and the Tromix with HK sights. In comparing the three it looks like the sight plane of the Krebs sights is about 1/8 inch higher than the stock sights. The HK sights line up about 1/4 inch higher still than the Krebs. I was just eyeballing it but that would seem to eliminate the HK sights for your needs. Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. I should have know someone around here would have all 3 styles It does sound like the Krebs Custom will be the way to go. I REALLY like the look of the HK sights, but I'm just no
  9. I just checked out Dinzag's site and I like the look of that front sight w/out the set-screws. I see that he has a Tall front sight and a Short front sight. Any idea which one would be a better match with the Krebs rear ghost-ring?
  10. I was referring to the sights made by Krebs Custom and available through Carolina Shooters Supply. If I had to guess I would say they look like they would preserver the "stock" sighting plane, but I just wanted to confirm wiht someone who uses them. Likewise, i'd like to hear from someone who uses the H&K sights. I'm new to the modification part of the Saiga ownership, so I value any opinion that comes from experience. Thank you
  11. I'm looking for some replacement sights for my conversion (currently in-progress) Here is the question: What is the sight alignment like with the Krebs vs H&K sights? I am a military trained shooter and have a very tight cheek-weld. with many firearms, the rear sight sits too high for me to use. I get on the stock, then have to pick my head up slightly to acquire the sight. I encountered this issue with a borrowed Mossberg 930SPX that had the LPA ghost-rings on it. The stock sights (which totally suck) actually line up very well for me. What I need is something that will
  12. I think several other people mentioned that they had good experiences with that kind of paint. I think that I'm either going to use duracoat or parkerize, I've got two weapons to work on, so maybe one of each. Eventually I intend to do a Duracoat job on it (desert camo maybe?), but I opted for spraypaint right now so I can get it together and get some shootin' done! I've been shooting it regularly in sporter config for months now and I finally have the time to tinker with it. My wife just got herself a new Mossy 590 Persuader with a PG stock on it. It looks so badass that I could
  13. [ I wouldn't grind anything until you have all the parts. This way you can see if you really need to and if you do, you will be able to see exactly how much you need to grind since no two Saigas are alike....especially in the fit and finish area. You make a very valid point here. I will wait until I've got my parts in before fiddling with anything. The FCG I have on order is the Tromix modified Tapco G2. I was just prepping by watching some assembly videos and they were talking about having to grind down the safety to get it to interface properly with the FCG. So far so goo
  14. I beleive that only applies to the Saiga Shotguns, not the rifles...which Saiga are you referring to? My bad....I was referring to a Saiga-12. I've got it completely stripped and have painted the bottom of the reciever at this point. I'm just waiting for my parts to come in later this week to reassemble. If I need to grind something then I want to get it done now so I don't have to waste time during assembly.
