  1. Gotcha. I searched a little bit and from the handful of threads I came across in the Vepr forum and AKFiles, no definitive answer about the conversion. But I didn't dig deep. Seems alot went to ban states where the use of standard capacity OG AK mags is a no no.
  2. Standard Saiga mags don't require a bullet guide. They have a feed lip built into the front of them. I think there was a lengthy thread over on the AKFiles about using standard AK mags in the Pioneer and Super.
  3. You'll be happy with it once it's lined out.
  4. It wouldn't be if that rear sight wasn't there. My mistake for not taking that into account early on.
  5. If you are okay with the real estate that your current lower would leave exposed and unused, then just sell or return/exchange your current upper and get the upper that matches the different RDS. You'd be able to put it far enough forward that it would clear the HK sight upon removal. Otherwise yeah, your new plan will work too and look a little cleaner.
  6. None of that matters because if the HK sight was not there, he could quickly, by the use the of a quick throw lever, remove it in a few seconds. Then upon re-installation, it would return to zero. I'm not even gonna address the shimming nonsense that you keep bringing up.
  7. Yeah with that setup that's what you're gonna have to do. With the forward bias of the 301 mount and a 30mm upper, you're able to remove the dust cover with it installed. With that HK sight and super long picatinny upper, you're pretty well fucked for quick removal. Try cheating the RS upper as far forward on the lower as you can. Then try and remove the dust cover.
  8. Oh damn that looks like a pain in the ass. You have to remove the upper to remove the whole thing because of the HK sight?
  9. Gotta give it a try and lob them in there.
  10. 25yds and irons? Mine really likes Sluggers too. Out of the 4-5 different brands I've tried it liked Sluggers and Winchester Super X the best. http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/gallery/album/841-s12-slug-practice/ 75yds and irons ^
  11. Post up the results. What is your lead of choice? Since we can't own SBS' where i live, i still rock the OE length 19" barrel. It does surprisingly well at 100yds.
  12. I really think you guys are reading way too much into this. Fake news is Fake news.
  13. When you are able to stretch the S12's legs out to 100yds with slugs (like i often do), a quality mount comes in very handy. Shifts in zero with the recoil of a 12ga and a 1oz slug can be huge at 100yds. Especially when the group is already going to be a 5" or so spread.
  14. Actually I said, I don't think you understand what you are saying, when you state that the side rail likely may need fixed. Which you obviously didn't or don't, because the majority of Saigas do not need them fixed and that a quality side rail will return to zero. You don't have any experience with one that does, so why say all side rails will not return to zero? People looking to mount an optic on their Saigas side rail, will potentially read this thread and see that you said their gun will likely need fixed. And in order to do so will entail a fair amount of work to get it done correctly. Gu
  15. The fuck? "I am just helping out here." So am I. There wasn't a single attack by anyone in this thread. I countered what you said with fact. Fact, Cheap AK optic mounts have proven to be failure prone and cause wandering zeros. Fact, the overwhelming majority of Saigas DO NOT need their side rails adjusted. Fact, i can remove the dust covers on my Saigas and Bulgarian Arsenals, while the RS 301/30mm optic mounts and Aimpoint PRO's are still installed, it's tight but doable. Fact, they also hold zero when i remove and reinstall them.
  16. Do they cost $48 as suggested by HB, above? You get what you pay for. Perhaps the garbage mounts are why HB "had to" fix his side rails? Sorry.
  17. Again HB you don't understand what you are saying. With a quality mount, not UTG garbage, it will return to zero after every removal and install. OP, it's literally a matter of swinging a lever to remove and install the MI and RS mounts. A real difficult task. I'm super curious as to why MI said their mount is not made for shotguns? I wouldn't hesitate to put one on my S12. It's the cheap optics I'd be worried about. BTW, when you say the side rail "likely may" need shimmed, you are implying that of the thousands of Saigas that have been imported, the majority of them need their sid
  18. Do you already have your red dot picked out? You seem pretty dead set on a picatinny mount. And I don't think HB understands what "likely may", means.
  19. Yes you are correct. A Picatinny base mounted RDS is going to sit high. So high, that you will probably be able (need) to rest your chin on the butt stock to use it. 30mm is the lowest mounting option for an RDS on an AK, using the factory siderail. Figure out if you're comfortable with mounting an optic high up or if you prefer as low as possible. Pick your red dot first. then get the upper to fit it. You'll be looking at about $180/$190 for an RS optic mount system. They are nice tho. I've also heard the Midwest Industries Gen2 stuff is nice as well.
  20. Because that short little rail is not picatinny. It's to mount the (an) upper to. It gives you left right centering adjustment of the optic, over the firearm. That short little rail doesn't reach over the top of the dust cover. It's just a platform to mount any of the handful of uppers to. Have a look at all the extra stuff and see if you can put two and two together..... https://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=9656&name=RS+Products+AK-300+M-Series+Modular+Side+Mount The whole system is modular.
  21. You can do it, if you have basic tools. All you need is a drill and bits, a hammer and either an AK gas piston rivet or nail of some sort to secure the new piston.
  22. You understand that buying the RS-AK301M, is only the main body lower section of mounting an optic? You still need to buy your choice of RS upper, that is specific to the style of RDS you choose. I think they offer 5 styles of uppers. I guess what i'm saying is you need to decide on an optic and then pick the corresponding RS upper section.
  23. It's unlikely you'll need to do anything to the side rail mount. What RDS are you planning? The lowest option you have is a 30mm RDS in an RS 30mm tube mount. That should put the tube a few millimeters above the dust cover. I'm curious to hear how the cheaper RDS' will hold up to the repeated abuse of a 12g.
  24. Cool story bro. Now move the FCG forward and address the reason it doesn't like 2-3/4" shells.
  25. Sell one of those OEM mags to fund some real conversion parts, to move the FCG forward.
