  1. Thanks for the thread, it was an informative read. I guess that answers my question, sort of. I might have to open it up with something a tad bigger than a 3/8 drill bit.
  2. I read that people drill out their ak74 brakes to give enough room for the 7.62 round, since it needs more room than the size of the bullet. I read that a 3/8 drill bit would be big enough to do this. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone actually done this and shot their rifle without it blowing up? Thanks again guys, this will be the final piece to complete my saiga.
  3. Ok so I drilled the hole and it went pretty smoothly, then as I broke through to the other side the drill bit snapped. I guess I'll just leave it in there instead of tapping it out and retapping one of the pins in. Still have to do the other hole but now I need a new drill bit. thanks for the help guys.
  4. I am trying to put a Bulgarian ak74 front sight block on my saiga. I have my old fsb off and the new one is in place. The fsb already has holes through them and I have the correct pins that come with it (3mm I believe?). I have a 7/64 drill bit that I am using since its a tad smaller than 3mm. No drill press though, only have a hand drill. So here's a few questions: Is 7/64 a good size for doing this? It seems like if I just drill through I'll be taking a lot of barrel out, am I suppose to completely clear the holes of any barrel? I don't see how the pins would fit in otherwise...
  5. Ok, got it off. There's a few nicks in the barrel but nothing too deep... can this affect the barrel negatively besides looking bad? It wasn't threaded by the way.
  6. Ok I measured it and I don't beleive that I'm cutting into the barrel. I'll wait and get a pipe cutter later. Thanks again.
  7. I hope I'm not one either. I didn't ask these before because I had searched other threads and it didn't seem too bad. I'm just second guessing myself now that I saw some of the bad jobs and this is taking longer than expected. So even if it has threads, a screwdriver will pop it off? or will it still seem to be stuck in place even when the cut is made? Just wondering if I should stop cutting and twist more... thanks
  8. I'm cutting the barrel shroud off of my Saiga and need some help. I'm using a dremel, cutting in a circle around the barrel (not the length of the barrel) and I'm worried about cutting too deep. Will i see the black finish underneath to know I should stop cutting? I'm using cutting oil and I'm wondering if I have it cut enough but maybe its just stuck due to possible threads or glue. If there are threads will it still just pop off or will I have to twist it off? Thanks.
  9. Actually drilling the two rear pins gave me more trouble than the bullet guide. Probably because I didn't use a quality drill bit, or I just don't know how to use a drill. Also, it was the first time I used a tap when I installed the bullet guide, and I did it perfectly the first time. It sounds much harder than it really is.
  10. Don't have the tools or expertise? If you have a drill, a dremel (you could probably get away with a file, might take a while though!), a little patience, and some common sense, you can easily do the whole conversion yourself. I just finished installing the bullet guide and painting the bottom of the receiver, and started with almost zero experience with any of these tools. Some will probably look down on you, but it is your rifle and you are the one who has to rely on and fire it. I think you are capable of doing the proper trigger group conversion, you'll be proud of it and you'll know your
  11. Thanks for the help, everything went smoothly.
  12. Ok, so I'm ready to install my bullet guide. I bought the kit from CSS and have a bench and a hand drill to work with. I'm going to get some cutting oil (never used it before) and I know to take my time and will use Dinzag's guide. I've never used a tap though, am I able to use that in my hand drill as well? And should I use a punch to make a dent where I want to drill so my drill bit doesn't wander? Thanks.
  13. Keeping it simple for now. I plan on adding a bullet guide soon.
