  1. El Cabron, I am just north west of Springfield, up in Menard County. Place was not free, but was free range. The owner of the property puts out corn and has box blinds and stands set up. Wasn't expensive either, but the accomodations were as far from extravogant as you could get .
  2. This was a regular hunt, meaning we aquired non-resident hunting license prior to going out, so we were allowed to keep whatever. Now, my understanding of a depredation hunt, for which no license is required, is that you aren't allowed to keep anything. This sow got skinned and quartered and is currently in my freezer, minus the meat that went straight to the grill shot of the stand location in the light hauled in on my little bear tracker like our freezer? LOL just before the skinning commenced
  3. Living in Central IL, I don't get to hunt hogs unless I travel somewhere, which is what some friends and I did last week. We drove down to east central Texas for a free range hog hunt. I was the only one lucky enough to have success on this trip and the 308 brought another hog down (did anyone have any doubts?-probably not to the guns ability but maybe to mine?) the sow didn't come into the feeder until just past midnight. I had been hearing their chatter for over an hour and had one sneak up behind the pop up blind I was in and wind me. Luckily, they didn't vacate the arear compl
  4. was talking about the weight of the Arsenal trigger pull has a clean break, no more long creep like factory Saiga trigger however, it is pretty heavy. guessing 8# or somewhere in that neighborhood yeah, not going to get the gun weight down which, without the scope and mount is only 7 lbs. 13.7 oz. according to my scale
  5. well, finally got around to performing my 308 saiga conversion. Decided since I had to paint it anyways, I might as well try my hand at dura coating as well. Chose to go with WWII OD Green. I am very pleased with the results. I also sprayed one of my Unita mags while I was at it . I installed an Arsenal 2-stage trigger. Very crisp break but I am not yet happy with the weight. Going to do some more work on it to get the poundage down. Still much better than factory. Sorry for the less than perfect cell pics. I turned the flash off as with the flash it was washing out too much.
  6. no doubt the Saiga .308 is a great hunter. That is the main purpose I bought mine for. I shot two hogs with it last week and both were one shot kills that dropped in their tracks. I will be converting mine for better balance and improved trigger but it isn't absolutely necessary. Trigger actually isn't too heavy or gritty. It just has a ton of creep with no clear breaking point. For hunting, the trigger is fine, just not great for printing on paper, IMHO.
  7. I wanted to post an update I took some of the advice I received here and went with a BP-02 low mount (bought from Primary Arms-very happy with their service and had the mount only 2 business days after placing the order) I bought Weaver Medium rings to hold the 1.5-6x44MM Bushnell Trophy XLT scope with 30 mm tube and 4A German reticle. I was worried about clearance with the medium rings but they ended up being perfect. I also mounted a Blackhawk cheek riser for a cheek rest. nice and tight-as low as I can go without modifying the rear sight
  8. just got my scope mounted Specs; .308 Saiga in 16.3" barrel BP-02 low mount with Weaver Medium rings Bushnell Trophy XLT 1.5-6x44mm Scope with 30 mm tube and German 4A reticle Blackhawk cheek riser
  9. Does anyone have any pictures of the car molding fix?
  10. I have found reviews and opinions on the MOLOT ultra low weaver mounts but can't find anything on the mount that has the rings made in, MOLOT extra low mount with 30mm rings. Seems this is a good option for those of us looking to mount and scope and nothing else to their Saiga. http://kalinkaoptics.com/mounts/ak-vepr-saiga-romak-1-2-slr/molot-vepr-ak-saiga-extra-low-profile-side-mount-30-mm-rings.html at $99 it seems expensive compared to the BP-02 mount but if you figure in the extra cost of 30 mm rings, it is quite comparable and most likely lighter. I am curious how low it sits
  11. Zen, thanks for the response I do have a couple more questions. With the BP-02, can you use your irons and scope? I believe I have read there are two different height options, low and high. I am trying to not have the scope sky high just to use the irons. I believe that the midwest industries mount allows you to see the irons down the rail, but I am not aware of any scope rings that wil still allow you to see down the rail. Does the POSP sit off to the side enough for iron use? How does this affect shooting at various distances? I plan on setting this up for an upcoming hog hu
  12. My new 16.3" 308 Saiga will be here Thursday. Bought this gun for an upcoming hog hunt and other future hunting/shooting fun. I am wanting to put a scope on this rifle, for short and longer range duty (no more than ~300 yards) I am leaning towards a scope like the Burris Fullfield 2-7x35 trouble I am having is deciding on a mount. I like the idea of a left of barrel mount like the POSP's to allow use of the irons without having the scope sky high but don't know of a good one or how well they work with weaver style mounts etc. I know the cheap option is a UTG mount but like I said, hav
