  1. I'd like to think I got Hella skills on wood working, but no, they were surplus stuff I got and refinished them. I've got some other stocks and HG sets out in my shop, I'll have to see what I can come up with. It was hard finding the right wood in the right condition to make them match as close as possible.
  2. OK, here is my take on a converted 308. I am not sure how I like the wood stock and lower HG I did, I have some other wood I might try something a little different, i.e. color.. Any suggestions? I already have several guns in the red color, so I was shooting for something a little different...
  3. Oh, duh... yea. the regular AKM sets have the palm swells, the PSL HG set does not. The palm swells are suppose to give you more grip/control.... yea, Harbor Freight, the land of Man stuff!! My experince with IWD is sometimes you have to be the squeaky wheel,,, Matt is a pretty busy dude... Well off to San Antonio! I see your in Houston... FYI I am a graduate of SHSU and lived and worked in Houston area for 6 years or so... How's it been down there lately?
  4. 1. I do stain everywhere, however I don't put a lot of finish on the inside of the handguards, etc.. I want some potection but not the same as the outside of the furniture. IMO it depends on what your applying, Tung Oil, Stain, etc... 2. There was very little fitting on the stock I got from IWD, IMO there is always some small degree of variance between guns and custom made stocks. Of course with mine I had to cut a hole in the receiver to accomdate the pistol grip. Some people don't want to change a thing on their gun, I call them the "purists" and I repect that, then there are guns I h
  5. Baron, Ok, let me clarify a little. I wrote both of those off of the cuff so to speak. I'll just go along and make comments to your questions. * Dark Walnut Stain I used was Miniwax. * LMF stuff is kind of expensive and all I ordered was the kit with the cherry stain. I have a lot of Miniwax stuff so that's why I used it and didn't want to fork out more $$$ on two types of stain from LMF. * No, I didn't use any reducer. Not opposed to it, just didn't use it. * Raising the grain: On the set(s) I did, I didn't raise the grain. By raising the grain, you can get a really smooth su
  6. I'm getting 3 to4 MOA at 100 yds w/ Wolf/Russian ammo. 2 to 3 MOA with my handloaded brass cased ammo. Basically I bought it to burn up steel cased ammo, which it loves to do.
  7. I am still in the process of buidling the Yugo M72 and the only other AK's I can think of that I want is the Yugo M76, but don't want to shell out the bucks for a gun I think that is over price and the l... Anyway... Top, then left to right 1. Romanian AES10B 2. Romanian PSL 3. Norinco 91 4. Polish Underfolder 5. VZ58 - token AK... LOL.. 6. Maadi RPM 7. Saiga .223 - Converted Enjoy!
  8. I've ordered well over $1K of stuff with Kalinka and had to returned stuff as well. No problems what so ever..
  9. $100 for the HG set and I want to say $50 for the buttstock... plus shipping...
  10. Thanks man... I've been playing around with a lot of stocks and stains before I finally got a look I liked and a process for it.... here another pic..
  11. Changed out the orginial wood for a IWD stock set. I know, I'm waiting on my pistol grip. Also, can't see it but I changed out the trigger package for Red Star's adjustable trigger... can't wait to get it to the range!
  12. No not yet. I just picked up a Romy RPK for $495.00 so I probably have to put that on the back burner, that is unless I can find a good deal I can't pass up.

This is my understanding, and please if anyone wants to correct me, by all means go ahead, that's the only way to learn. I believe you can stain a laminate stock. I have done so many times. The thing you really have to watch is stripping an old or already stained or poly covered stock. The laminate of course is glued together (lack of a better description) but some stripping can weaken the glue holding the layers of wood together (not good). The stock on my .223 above is a laminated stock that I stripped with a water base stripper. As a matter of fact I am wating on a PSL handgua

I took a couple of close up shots... Hate the glare from the camera when the flash goes off!!! Anyways.. if anyone is interested PM me and I'll give you the 411 on what I did...
  15. Your furniture looks great. Did you use dye to get the red color? Kinda sort a....I used Laurel Mountain Forge stain, Cherry. I used a little bit of black dye (Rit Dye) to darken the stain. The cherry is very, very, red. I topped it off several coats of plain polyurethane (semi gloss). I spent a lot of time trying different ways (Rit Dye added to polyurethane) and such to get the look I wanted. Now I got all these Romanian and Polish, handguards, buttstocks, etc...

Nope I refinished it myself. I used Laurel Mountain Forge stain, Cherry. I used a little bit of black dye (Rit Dye) to darken the stain. The cherry is very, very, red. I stripped the stock set I got from a vendor on the net, and slowly started in on staining the set. Sanded it down with a little 420 grit paper, very lighly, and then topped it off with several coats of plain polyurethane (semi gloss). If you want to buy some of the Laurel Mountain Forge stuff I suggest getting the gunsmith set, it's like $38 dollars. I like to refinish AK47 stocks and found this stuff to be pretty good.

I'll get some more pics out. It was a werid chain of events that lead me to the present stock set I have on there. But I got my black AK sling in from K-VAR today and I couldn't wait to snap a couple of pics and get them posted.

  20. It's a Weiger mag... Wish I could come across some more of them w/o paying an arm and a leg for one. However, I did come across another mag that looks just like them and with the help from the handy dremel... they work great as well... r u ready... Romanian 223 mag....
  21. Yea I'm with you guys on the red color.. I like the classic look but I really like the way I did the red staining on the AK74 stock set. BTW I don't do a lot of endorsements, but a friend turned me on to Laurel Mountain Forge product and I must say that stuff is pretty good. Thanks for ya'lls input!
  22. On my conversion I have comeup with two sets of furniture. Would you guys let me know which one ya'll like more, I've got my favorite but want to get others thoughts. Thanks....
