Not sure what a new S12 now (mine was $439 shipped from Gilbert's). But if I were to get another start with an IZ-109 (19" with bead sight). If you can pick one of those up with the factory LRBHO installed then that would be better.
Yes the mag prices are redicilous. I think I paid around $100 each for ny 8 rounders. I think I saw some on Gunbroker for $450...Crazy.

Not really.
Stuff would just be easier to find.
K-Var has the rear stock and trunnion.
DPH has a good copy of the flash hider.
The retainer plate for the S12 became a stocking item about 3 weeks after I posted the Picts of the standard one I modified.
Ak builder has front latch parts and the trigger guard sets (although the trigger guards they offer need to be modified to be astetically correct).
I guess the only thing I would have done differently is not worried about the pistol grip plate. The length of the plate limits you on the grip you can use. ( I can't use the modern Russian grip or MD Arms Molot grip because the grip base is too long for the plate). If you want the larger grip I think AK builder has longer plates for that application.
Other than that I wish I would have bought 7 more 8 rounders before the price went through the roof!!!

Back from the dead again...
I finished up this build in 2008.
My goal for this build was to make a S12C at a time when the correct parts were next to impossible to find.
The rear trunnion, front latch parts and 10 slot flash hider are Russian and were ordered from rus military.
To get the correct trigger guard I had to modify virgin Bulgarian parts (I have a write up on this on here somewhere).
I still remember cutting the receiver with a hacksaw thinking "if I cut this wrong I'm screwed!!!"
The S12C conversion is still my favorite build and of all my builds It gets shot the most.
Great learning experience. Glad people still use it for reference.
And yes, I think I made Mikhail smile.

$4500??? I would have been on that like white on rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snow-storm! Could have built me two more S-12s, and then bought an AK and an AR as well! I hear ya though, I turned down a substantial offer on the old 'vette so I guess I can understand.
At that time there were not too many people doing 12C side folder conversions and the parts were a little harder to come by.
I did tell the guy, for that kind of money one could find an original imported 12C and have change for a few 8 round mags.
I guess I am just a little too honest.

I have too much in it to sell it. I would have an issue just sourcing most of the parts again.
Back in the panic days I did have an individual offer me $4500 at the range and I passed.
Sure that would have been a hell of a profit but I would regret it later.

I got my latch from, flash hider and rear trunnion from rus-military back in 2007.
Here is the install:

I usually make my own from virgin Bulgarian parts.
These look factory.

I like the factory 10 rounders - both counter and solid body
-
For my S-12 I have
3 Factory 2 Rounders
3 Factory 5 Rounders
3 Factory 8 Rounders
1 MD Arms Drum (I would like to get 2 more)
For my S-410 I have:
2 Factory 4 Rounders for 2.5" Shells (I'd like to get 1 more)
3 Factory 4 Rounders for 3" Shells
3 Factory 10 Rounders (With Counter Window Mod 1)
3 Factory 10 Rounders (Solid Body Mod 2)
To complete the set for the 410 I would like to get 3 Factory 2 Rounders for 3" Shells)
For me that's plenty.
As for my other platforms I figure 9 loaded mags for each Rifle/Pistol.
I keep all 9 loaded + enough ammo to reload all 9 in one 50 cal ammo can.
I also made a cage to keep them in...

I have used one from a Galil on a build or two...

When I converted mine you only needed 5 parts to be compliant (FCG, Puck, PG - Done).
As far as Im concerned I followed the law when it was converted. I am not about to tear it back apart because someone changed their mind on something 4 years later. They can Cram it.

I've see this in person and it is a great design. The mags drop with a push of a button. Another Great product for Tac 47.

I really like the 7 slot Flash Hider at DPH.
It's a quality product.

I got one for my son to use a when he was 9. He loves to shoot it.
We even did a School science project with it.
Now it has been converted with a Russian Polymer Side Folder.
If he has an interest then get him what he wants.

Originally the stock was like this
Import Version
Welded the holes up an welded on a pistol grip plate.
Re-profiled the back to accept the Ak100 Sidefolder and smoothed out the welds
Other Side
Installed trigger guard (The bolts were eventually replaced by rivets)
I have not refinsihed it yet. I need to blast it and Moly Resin it. When completed the back will look like My S-12
I have also upped my Mag count
So far I have
3 - 10 Round Russian 3" Counter Mags as pictured Mod 1
3 - 10 Round Russian 3" Solid Body Mags Mod 2
3 - 4 Round Russian 3" Mags
2 - 2 Round Russian 2.5" Mags
I am looking for another 2.5" 4 rounder and 3 - 3: 2 Rounders to complete the set.

Yes, Convert it and make it yours.
As posted above put enough US parts on it so that there are no compliance issues if you use russian made mags.
I converted a 410 for my son. He liked my Saiga 12C Conversion and wanted one just like it in 410.
My son shooting gallon jugs of Jello for his school science project.
Compliance Parts:
Tromix Puck - 1 US Part
K-Var Pistol Grip - 1 US Part
Tapco G2 Trigger (modified by Dinzag) - 3 US Parts
Slotted Flash Hider - 1 US Part
I believe only 5 are required but that gave me 6
Convert away...

Nice looking set.
I like collecting the Russian Mags. Finding the right stuff is half of the fun.
The only US made S-12 mag I have is an MD Arms Drum.
For my S-12 collection I picked up
3 - Russian 8 Rounders (Izhmash Marked)
3 - Russian 5 Rounders (Izhmash Marked)
3 - Russian 2 Rounders (Izhmash Marked)
For the .410 I have so far
3 - Russian 10 Rounders - Solid Body Mod 2 (Izhmash Marked)
3 - Russian 10 Rounders - Window Counter Body Mod 1 (Non-Izhmash Marked)
3 - Russian 4 Rounders - Solid Body 3" (Izhmash Marked)
2 - Russian 4 Rounders - Solid Body 2.5" (Izhmash Marked)
I need 1 more 2.5" 4 round mag and 3 more 3" 2 round mags to complete the set. I guess I need to get busy with that.

Saigastock carries a factory 2 round S-20 mag for 3" shells.
they cost a pretty penny but they are much cheaper than the factory 2 round S-12 mags.
I would post a link but I'm not sure of their vendor status.
