joltash 0
Picked up my new .308 today and am having some trouble removing the gas tube for cleaning. It says something about a cotter pin. I don't see a cotter pin. How do you remove the tube?
thinking 1
Hi Well mine is a 223 but maybe I can help. There should be a little lever on the right side by the rear sight. It can be hard to do but you turn that so that the end of the lever is no longer against the block. You will see that the lever moves a pin that is holding the rear of the tube down. Turn the lever until the flat side of the pin will allow the tube to be lifted out. on my 223 this will also make the forearm stock come off but I believe the 308 has a screw on the bottom of the receiver. Good luck
joltash 0
Turn it clockwise?
crowak 12
Counter clockwise.
jtoddellis 2
I have a .308 and to remove the gas tube I put a rag on the lever by the rear sight and moved it up using a pair of pliers. It was kind of hard to get it back together but that may be just because it's new.
jtoddellis 2
By the way my manual says something about using an accessories container to remove the gas tube for a .308. Did anybody get something like this with their .308?
Siagalova 0
I use the bottom (skinniest) slot on the bottom of my cleaning tube. I'm not sure but I think that's what it's there for. Just put the bottom slit over the lever latch and turn the tube! gives you leverage and doesn't hurt anything.
joltash 0
Finally got it off. Big pain in the butt though. There is a dimple in the metal below the rear sight that the latch is clicked in to. Had to use a knife the pry the latch out of the dimple, then it would turn. At first, I didn't realize the latch moved because it was so hard to move. I though maybe it was welded in place or something.
