"While I'm on a tangent, why is M.L.K. blvd, st, dr, hwy, etc. always in the most fucked up ghetto-ass neighborhood in a city? Prove me wrong."

No argument from me on any of that.........

Only exception I can think of is in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.......They named an overpass over I-30 on the west edge of town, and only the overpass !!

Took this picture myself............

That's the first exception I've seen to that! Out of the 30 or so cities I've lived in and around, the above stated holds true. Why is that?

I would like to know why there seems to be a requirement that EVERY city have a MLK Blvd to start with?

To appease the naacp I guess.

What about a George Washington Blvd or a Ben Franklin or Henry or Adams or Edison or someone else whop REALLY made a difference?

And what about white history month? Oh.... that would be racist...

The problem with Black History is that there isn't much of it recorded. I don't know about you guys, but I studied all kinds of Middle Eastern history in school. Root of civilization or some such... We learned a good amount about Middle and South America as well. We even studied a little bit of far Eastern history.

The regions that I've listed above have one thing in common: writing. Am I saying that Black people are inferior in some way? No. I'm just saying that most of Africa is a harsh, unforgiving, hellish place... for written materials. Paper, wood, metals, and even stone (which there weren't exactly huge quantities of - think Egypt) weather away pretty quickly there. Most of what we know comes from European explorers. That's why it was called: "The Dark Continent."

I remember something about one particular nation, though I don't remember their name. Great sailors. They even had an "Empire". I only know this because my father is (among other things) a History major. He told me about this nation once during a conversation about "Black History", but I don't remember much more than that.

Either way: most relavent history, in which black people have played a significant part, has been very recent in historical terms. I don't object to anyone being included in American History. That was it's own separate class. The more we know, as people, the better.

Example: here in IL, it seems there was a distinct oppinion about whether or not the Civil War should have been fought. Apparently there were a good number of speeches made, claiming that freeing slaves was not worth fighting a war over. Even better, there was apparently a tradition of killing Provost Marshals who came to draft soldiers for the war effort. It's also interesting to note that all of the really big race riots happened in "Northern" states. No one ever mentions the devestating affect of forced desegregation on the Black Middle Class. Of course, many people also seem to believe that while forced integration was a good thing with Blacks, it was a horrible thing with Indian tribes. Go figure.

Good thing that isn't why we fought it, huh?

In Lansing Mi. MLK Blv. USED to be a road named Logan after a civil war hero.

about the same time as the name change, they put in a new road called edgewood that crossed the now MLK blv. Why take it away from an old Civil war hero.... could have just as easy named the new road after MLK....

I don't have any problem with them naming a road after MLK but I do take issue with changing the name of an existing road with businesses on it. You know how much of a pain in the a** that is to have everything reprinted with a new address? Every single city in this country does NOT have to have a road named after him.

Indeed, I know the trouble that causes. The naming of roads for the Dr. seems to be an attempt at illusionary empowerment. We even have one named after Richard Pryor. I think he was born here, but the road is still in the "ghetto ass part of town." It's right down the street from what I'd like to call "Fried Chicken Square". I kid you not, there are fast food places, on every corner of the intersection, specialising in Chicken: KFC, Popeye's, Church's Chicken, and another whose name I can not remember for the life of me. I thought Church's Chicken was a Southern phenomenon.

Off beat piece of trivia: <trying not to laugh> My mother and father had thier wedding reception at a Church's Chicken in Jacksonville Alabama. The ceremony had been held in their living room, conducted by an army chaplain, and interrupted in the middle by a door-to-door sales' man. The only cake they could find said "Happy First Communion". Ah, the good old days. :lolol:

Another interesting tidbit on the Etymology of the word in question:

"The Spanish word negro originates from the Latin word niger, meaning black. In English, negro or neger became negar and finally nigger, most likely under influence of French nègre (also derived from the Latin niger). [1]

[1] Pilgrim, David (September 2001). Nigger and Caricatures."

That was the best I could find that had a source attached (Wikipedia).

I have the utmost respect for any "minorities" that overcome the peer pressure to become a loser in this society and actually make something respectable of themselves, even more so than an Anglo who accomplishes the same things.

Does that make me a "racist", too?

That's funny, I am the same way. Every once and a while I will hear a young black guy say "sir"/"ma'am" and be articulate and I always do a double take. Most people I know do the same, but it's to be expected when they do it. I think that, as much as it's a good thing that some black people act respectful and intelligent, it is sad to realize that it is unexpected of them when they do. All of this sounds very racist to the general population, but we all know that this is true and that some ignore the truth in the name of "tolerance". The bottom line is that the future of the relationship between our two races is in the hands of the "black community", we have done all that we can, short of becoming slaves ourselves.

Do you think the NAACP even cares that the very things they lobby for are the things that causes discrimination against them? I can raise my children to treat everyone fairly and to "do unto others, as you would have them do unto you", but they Will learn to discriminate on their own and it won't be anything I have taught them. Case and point, my daughter and I were at a gymnastic event, it was an open community day, she was waiting in line patiently, and was continuosly cut in front of by 3 other juveniles that were from the same family and their parents were standing there watching. So my daughters response was to cut in front of other kids. Well I don't want my kids to get walked all over, but to set the example, I made sure that my daughter understood that she needed to wait her turn, but of course this had no effect on the other parents. But just like any child, I can see why they don't understand why it's ok for some people to do this and not them. As they grow into adults, I can see how this is going to shape their opinion of other people. As adults, my kids will see the "rights" or better said "special privileges" that these other people have that don't apply to my them and this will shape their opinions. That is what is so messed up about the anti-discrimination they are supposedly working for. By asking for and getting all this special treatment, they are asking to be segregated from the rest of normal society. I blame the parents for raising their kids to live for this special treatment as it just perpetuates the cycle. This is the problem with our society and welfare system. No matter how "right" I try to raise my children, they will one day wonder why other people get free houses, free food, free money, and why when they try to respect other people they get trampled on.

This is more a matter of culture than of race. Black people use the "n" word as a way to "own" or "get back" at what white people did to them. Atleast that's the story told to the outside. The real reason is a self loathing ingrained to this day in much of the black culture. And culture is what's important here.

Modern black Americans are really the same in many ways as Southern white trash. I know this, because I grew up in a poor white neighborhood, but my grandmother lives in the ghetto. The only real differences were musical tastes. Both communities were nasty, and the people were bad. Made me not want to be like either group of folks when I realized that both sucked. No matter how much one side would bad mouth the other, they were far more alike than either wanted to admit.

It sounds rediculous, and it is really. But, slavery, and Jim Crow really affect the black community after all these years. White folks should acknowledge that, because it's true.

But, these things being said, what really needs to be admitted by the black community today, is that welfare, and government support haven't helped, and aren't going to start helping black people. Black folks also need to quit thinking as some monolithic group. Not all white people are out to get you. While the cops often are after you, it isn't because your black. Most times, it's because they are assholes, and would've gone after anyone (they are bad cops, and there alot of 'em).

As for white people, step off blacks. Let 'em get their bearings. Accept them for who they are on an individual basis. You have to be willing to accept the premise that until proven bad, a black person gets the same status as any other.

Myself, I think of myself as an individual. After that I'm a male. Then an American. My race is about seven on the list of stuff about me.
