MD_Willington 11
Okay, sitting here thinking up a goofy ass way to make an ak-74 magazine work with .223 Not sure if anyone has ever tried this... take the ak-74 follower out of the magazine take an AR-15 follower and cut the legs off it trim the AR follower so it has the outside profile of the AK-74 follower glue the AR follower on top of the AK-74 follower ???? nalioth 405
Save yourself some trouble. Start with a bulgarian or east german plastic AK74 mag (not a modern Bulgarian .223 waffle mag). Cut the stops inside the lips (keeps the 5.45 follower from riding high) so the follower will ride all the way to the top. JB weld / bubble gum / epoxy the existing nub (that looks like a bullet) on the existing follower at the rear (so the 5.56 round sits higher) Profit. Aloxite 1
MD Willington, I have done exactly that. A couple of things: Add "Grind off the bump on the '74 follower" to the instructions. (obvious I know, I'm just dotting the t's and crossing the i's) Leave the back of the AR follower 3/16" higher than the front. I just left 3/16" of rear leg. Make sure that the follower can travel high enough in the magazine the the last round is held firmly. (grind on the AR follower not the mag) On any '74 mag used with 5.56 you might need to sand the front inside of the feed lips a tiny bit IF the cartridge wants to hang up on it.
