  1. I'd do a 308. You don't have to do any magwell mods. You don't need a bullet guide. You don't have the 4 holes in the sides of you receiver after you move the trigger. You win the big n slow vs small n fast debate, by going with big n fast. Plus there are 40-50 million 7.62x39 AK's in the world, not very many 308s. Downsides are mag cost and ammo cost.
  2. This S-12 has the original finish over most of it and flat black Duplicolor fogged over the welded up areas.
  3. Kalinka has just the lower part for converting an AK scope to SVD or SVD scope to AK. \ http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=61
  4. I didn't buy any to try because it looks like the front is way too wide. To get the top round high enough and at the correct angle you would have to cut away a bunch of the mag. It seems like the result would be pretty weak. You'd have to come up with a way to make a front lug / bullet guide stout enough not to bend.
  5. I modified the 12 round Galil mags to fit a stock (well as far as the mag is concerned) rifle. I didn't mod the rifle to fit the mags. Someone does just that though, Red Jacket IIRC. I'll try to get some pics up of a modified mag and a stock galil mag so that the following make sense. The Galil 308 mags need major 4 changes to fit the stock saiga magwell: 1. Grind down 1 thickness of the doublethick area at the front of the mag, you can leave about 3/4" at the bottom. (ie the mag is too wide at the front, if you were to mod the rifle to fit the mags the trunnion would hav
  6. Nope, they aren't good for anything.
  7. I know this wasn't your question, but here is another option. I used an East German gas tube and upper handguard. I flattened the stock Saiga handguard with a belt sander. Then I just filed in some slots to match those on the upper handguard. The vfg is a modified Yugo pistol grip.
  8. Thanks for all of the kind words. I've been looking at my S-12 handguard thinking that it would be much easier to make than the standard AK setup. So, that is going to be my next woodworking project. I don't know when it will be, I just do what the voices in my head tell me to do. Also, I'd like a metal mag instead of the plastic. That will complicate the project. (I think the voices are telling me to go to the guy with the CNC sheet metal break.) I'm not a big fan of water based stains. I'm not sure but I'd guess that most are pigment based and not dye based. So it's mor
  9. PK-AS-S Tantal says "THE BEST OPTIC WE SELL, PERIOD!" I am a believer.
  10. My favorite is the PK-AS-S <--- link - read all it about it here. Tantal say's it is the best optic they sell, period. Tantal is the only vendor that sells these that I will recommend. It isn't magnified but it is more than just a red dot. These things are very clear. It has a black 1 MOA dot and black circle that is always present. Plus it has a variable red dot when you want it. I have a 4x PSO and a 2.5-5x PSO, but I think I'd rather have this on the rifle any day.
  11. MD Willington, I have done exactly that. A couple of things: Add "Grind off the bump on the '74 follower" to the instructions. (obvious I know, I'm just dotting the t's and crossing the i's) Leave the back of the AR follower 3/16" higher than the front. I just left 3/16" of rear leg. Make sure that the follower can travel high enough in the magazine the the last round is held firmly. (grind on the AR follower not the mag) On any '74 mag used with 5.56 you might need to sand the front inside of the feed lips a tiny bit IF the cartridge wants to hang up on it.
  12. Almost all European AK47 mags have the rib. The Chinese mags have a bump instead of the rib. It is just two different ways to manufacture the mag. I'd just learn to live with it.
