Tri-Rail mount possible with Galil forearm?

Recommended Posts

I just got my Saiga 223 and I was thinking of getting a trirail mount next to the forearm:

Would that work if I used this on the Saiga?

The idea is that I could mount a bipod or laser or other accessories on it in the future.

Yes that should still work. You do know Tapco sells a kit for adding rails to the Galil HG right?

No I didn't but I looked it up, is this it?

I bought the Tapco Galil-ish HG referenced above. It will work with one of Dinzag's HG retainers. I was disappointed with Tapco's product. It requires some fitting (filing). Mine sits unmolested in the parts box. It is bulkier than the real deal, but not as substantial and reportedly melts or deforms with barrel heat. I read that an original Galil AR HG will fit a Saiga with Dinzag's retainer; otherwise a Galil rear HG retainer would be required. The synthetic HG's are plentiful, but the wooden ones are scarce and expensive.

I also have the tri-rail you referenced. I may have to grab it out of my parts box to see if it would work with a Saiga 223.

Ok then, what do you guys suggest is the best way to get some rails on the HG?

If you go with the Tapco Galil-style HG (or an original Galil HG) the Tri-rail mount will work. If you wanted a less obtrusive mount and needed only two attachment points, the Tri-rail's bottom Pic rail can be removed. If you need only one, adding 4 nuts, the barrel strap and single Pic rail can be used (using a larger socket head screw and threading the Pic rail could be an option, though I haven't tried it yet) .

The Tapco HG with mounted rails seems a bit crowded. The two humps under their version already make it a tight fit... not much real estate for the hand. Form follows function, so go with what works for you.

It was hard for me to envision some of the possible add-on combinations, hence my overstocked parts box.

Well all I'm really looking to do is to add a stable bipod that's hopefully not mounted on the barrel.

I was hoping the Galil style HG would be perfect but apparently it melts?

An ARM handguard would better serve you. It is recessed for a bipod. They are readily available. I got a beat-up one I am refinishing. Any particular reason(s) you do not want a barrel mounted bipod? Even true Galils have them mounted there (via the gasblock/front sight)?

Aluminum heat shields (easily fabricated) might help on the Tapco HG's. Others may have better luck with Tapco. It just paled by comparison with the "real McCoy".

That one looks crazy. Its like some sort of Borg invasion of a rifle.

Do I need any additional hardware besides just the bipod? No adapters or anything?

So I just need to order this?

My Saiga 223 is completely stock.

From their website: "Harris Bipods clamp to any quick detachable sling swivel stud."

So, just the bipod is needed. Check online for sales, etc. These are the most popular brand.
