What's the best way to square-off a cut barrel?

Recommended Posts

I cut down my barrel on my 308 a bit, and I don't think my cut is very square. What's a good way to make sure it's square? I've got Dinzag's crowning tool, will that do it, or do I need to square the end up first? Thanks!

Gotta love the work created for gunsmiths by a man with a sawzall.............Brownell's has some home-owner grade crowning tools which can do pretty well for occasional use.....not really good for a production shop, but you might take a look to keep your costs down.......... :killer:

On my .308 barrel and also my friend's (KrisFox's) 12 gauge, I used a hacksaw and marked it first with a pipe cutter to get a good reference line. Checked it for square with a framing square and sanded / ground it smooth using a dremel with cutoff wheel and grinding stone face on. Then I used dinzag's crowning tool to finish it off (the rifle barrel). Turned out great. Installed the newly reamed out FSB on the .308 by eye and the first shot from 30 yds was dead on with the irons, freestanding off the shoulder.

Sounds largely like what I've got going on. OK, I won't worry about it too much, then. Thanks!

In a pinch you can level it with a plumb bob in a vice. Then use a file to square it off. Re-crowning can be done with a brass bolt and lapping compound with a drill press. These are WECSOG methods, but they will work. Not as well as the methods outlined above, but then again you did not bother to shorten the barrel in a lathe either. :D

Good Luck!
