cash farmer 0
I have a registered 8 inch short barreled shotgun Saiga 12 . I had all the work done by a 'professional' and love the way it looks but am a little upset over its reliability. It functions perfectly with the walmart bird shot for about 30 rounds and then starts to have problems ejecting shells. After unscrewing the gas cap and cleaning out the gas port and puck it functions perfectly for another 30 rounds then starts failing to eject. My question is could the gas port be to big and is letting to much grim and gunk inside the gas chamber, which would clog up the gas port/ system ? While cleaning the gas ports as soon as I unscrew the gas cap gunk is full in the gas chamber.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...
Javelin 1
It depends on how much your gas ports are opened up (sounds like it is). It could (and can) lead to premature fouling. I had Tromix leave my gas ports mildly open due to the problems of an increased sized ports. Now I just have to shoot standard and full power loads (no low rim for me). Also, some Saigas just do not function well on low rim brass period but with all the gunk I wonder if your ports were drilled at a 45 degree angle away from the chamber? cash farmer 0
I'm going to load up my drum with 00 buck tomorrow and see if it runs better 'longer' before it needs to be cleaned. I just like being able to shoot the cheap stuff without having to stop and clean after every 30 rounds. Have you heard of any fixes for a overly large gas port? Thanks... BobAsh 582
Did they move the gas block? I'd like to see a picture.

BobAsh 582
How many gas ports? Looks like the gas block is moved back far enough. Edited November 30, 2008 by BobAsh
cash farmer 0
It looks to be just one big one. I'll try and get a better pic tomorrow of the gas port hole. Is there any way to correct this ? Thank you for your help ..Dave
TonyRumore 1,332
The gas block is not moved back quite as far as I would have done it, so I am sure the gas ports are larger then the stock .073" size. I'm curious what hand guard is used with that setup. It's too long to use the Tromix shorty hand guard, and too short to use a standard length unit. The gas port hole(s) could be welded up and redrilled. Tony
BobAsh 582
It looks to be just one big one. That will be your problem. Plastic will shear into the gas system via that one giant hole.
cash farmer 0
I had the original handguard modified to fit the gun when it was shortened only after I bought the Tromix shorty handguard and found that it wouldnt fit . I should have waited and sent it to Tromix. Is this something that Tromix masters could fix or am I up a creek..? Thanks..
TonyRumore 1,332
The gas block should really be moved back further. I can do it, but not soon. Call me after the next AW ban and I will have plenty of time on my hands to fix your gun. Tony
