3 gun shoot or defence shotgun

Recommended Posts

Pattern your gun and see how it shoots.

On my favorite 3-Gun scattergun, I use a modified choke, just because it seems to pattern right with my point-shooting technique. Full tends to be a little less forgiving and IC can sometimes scatter a little too much to get the payload on target to knock down the heavier steel poppers past 15y.

There are variable chokes out there that allow you to go from open cylinder bore to Extra Full with a few cranks. And then there is the fantastic "Patternmaster" system that throws the cleanest patterns i've ever seen, including Vang'ed barrels.

Stick with full choke you will be fine. Although there are times when I wish I had a modified choke. One match I know of will DQ you for changing chokes during a match. I agree with mcUzi patern you gun so you know where your pattern is going.

As topmaul said- you can have your Saiga threaded for whatever choke tubes you'd like.

I personally prefer Rem Chokes because I know they work, they're inexpensive and they offer a broad range of choking patterns.

That, plus by keeping all my shotguns threaded for one choke system, I only have to buy one choke and can use it on all of the guns.

I do keep a spare patternmaster, tho.

Great system. Patterns much cleaner than any "full" choke i've ever shot.

Are we talking about external thread? or internal? or can a gun smith do both?

thanks

Stu

Gunsmith is a broad term.

The last place I lived, the town gunsmith was an older man who could refinish a wood stock, shorten a barrel or install parts but everything else was out of his league. Other towns have gunsmiths with full machining facilities that can pretty much do whatever you want- but those guys are rare, and those who have such a gunsmith at their disposal are fortunate.

Most small gunsmiths farm out work and just tack on a premium for their time, especially in the way of refinishing, threading for chokes or other jobs that require high priced specialty gear or a higher degree of skill.

With the internet at your disposal, you should have no problem finding a smith who can thread your Saiga for chokes.

Yes, the threads are internal. Most gunsmiths capable of threading for chokes either refuse to thread a chromed barrel, or charge a premium for it, so keep this in mind.

Either way, it's usually no more than a hundred bucks or so, and once it's done, you have really broadened the capabilities of your shotgun, transforming it into a slinger of lead into a versatile machine capable of more controlled accuracy.

Its funny that I see everyone commenting on choke tubes for 3 gun shoots or defense....

Doesnt *ANYONE* out there HUNT with a saiga 12/20/.410???? and worry about what the pattern needs to be for certain hunting situations???

Must be just me, I reckon... heeyuh..heeyuh...( hmm... theres no redneck smiley...)

Lets talk about the competitions I guess it depends on the course of fire. For example are you shooting poppers or clays or maybe a Texas star. Me I use my ful choke because it gives me the punch I need to knock over the targets while using cheap walmart ammo. It does the job for me but I have to shoot each target indevedualy while some people like Mickporno can hit two or three with a wide pattern. By the same token I have seen poeple with short barrel and little of no choke have difficulties knocking the paddles off the Texas Star. The place I was at last weekend had steel targets made of one inch steel plate and they two were difficult to deal with even with the full choke I mean I needed a direct hit. Some places will have you use slugs. The answer to your question is it depends on the course of fire most people will put COF on thier website along with the round count. Carry more ammo than you think your going to need.

I don't use them because I have a fixed full choke and would have to have choke tube threads installed and have not as of yet done that.

If your going to be a serious competitor you will need interchangable choke tubes. If your like me and just having fun and meeting friends well no you can get away with not having tubes.
