No choke when shooting slugs. For shot, you need to shoot YOUR gun at the distances that you plan to shoot, with the shot you plan to shoot - if the patterns are too loose (not enough pellets close enough together) to do the job, use a tighter choke. Lead shot will work with tighter chokes, steel with looser. Steel will not compress like lead, so never use a full choke with steel. The manufacturers of shot shells will generally have some sort of guide on their websites. But every shotgun is an individual, and has it's own preferences.
