Just got a Howa 1500 Heavy Barrel .308

Recommended Posts

gonna put a Bell & Carlson stock on it...only thing I do not like is the Hogue stock(I love there grips so not knocking there products)

im gonna get the Lee reloader ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=121744 ) with these dies ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=148525 ) and expand as I go

I know I am gonna use Lapua Brass and Barnes bullets

Question 1: Do I match the grain of the bullet to my rifle or can I pick a bullet and play with the powder to "tune it"? I want to use 150-168 grain bullets

Question 2: I'm lost on what primers to use(best brand/size) and equally lost on powder

all help is extremely appreciated

Depending on whats easiest for you to procure... I would go with IMR4064 or Varget for powder... or maybe benchmark... BL-C(2) is ok too... but you will want magnum primers for that powder... I would go with benchrest large rifle primers for the extruded powders... ( IMR4064, Varget)

My personal favorite load was listed in this section here:

My rifle - Savage Model 12 F/TR really likes the 165 and heavier stuff...

You may need to adjust your load according to your specific barrel... not the length or twist... just YOUR BARREL... Each is different in what it likes best... or how far to seat off the lands...

Also... remember your rifle will only shoot as good as you can... good trigger technique... quality optics, mounted correctly... stable rest... no flinching, good breathing... etc...

The list goes on and on... Good luck!
