Removing the safety lever from a Norinco AK?

I noticed this on the last Mak conversion, you cant rotate the safety lever up past the FCG to get it out.

 

I had to remove the pins and move the whole assembly up away from the lever before it would clear, and then, the type of safety on the G2 trigger group did not work the same as the Original.

 

I made it work by grinding the part that actually engages the sear or disconnector away till it just cleared, is there something I am missing here?

I haven't messed with the MAKs before, but did you have the hammer forward and pull the trigger back while trying to clear the safety tab's rotation past the trigger? I know on my Saiga, it hits the back of the disconnector and I have to pull the trigger for it to clear.

Depending on the type of disconnector and the tab on the safety, sometimes the selector can go in first, sometimes last.
