New SGL-21

I just recently purchased an SGL21 and want to change the non folding stock for a skeleton folding stock. I like the K-VAR but wanted to know if this is an easy change out, basically a drop in item.

Thanks. How about the mechanism to hold it shut?

The easiest sidefolder to install that I know of is the Romanian "wire" sidefolder. It truly is a "drop-in" item. I have one on a WASR-10, and it works quite well. I think that DPH Arms has them.

Yea the "extendo-tang" models not only make you and your rifle look retarded, but looses any ergonomic advantage along the way.

 

TO THE OP:> instaling a triangle folder is hard, I would have a professional do it, it will run you $200 for the work.

 

Also, DPH arms sells the folder and instal hardware which will replace your current tang.

Just compare the links that Nut, and Sally put up, you'll see the difference at the front of the stock. If you dont mind the extra hump/tang on the thing then it's not a problem. Although Sally will think you look retarded. :haha:

To install an original style folder (Poly or triangle) it requirs a special hinge that you have to cut out the back of your reciever for. The true Russian ones use the much harder to obtain 5.5mm pin while most all other folders [bulgy(Im pretty sure) and various aftermarket offerings] will use the 4.5mm hinge pin design. DPH did begin to offer a foreign made hinge(made somewhere?) and I havent heard when/if Scott will have more for sale - Id email him and check it out. NOTE: there have been just a few random comments about those hinges being softer than stock. Im not sure if that was all of em, the initial units, or just a few opinions that have morphed all over the net.

 

The original style AK folders in poly and triangle use a small latch sticking out of the side of your reciever to lock it closed. This also requires a slot be cut precisely into the side of your reciever to mate up correctly. All AK models should take the same latch except for the S12's which are different.

 

Many of us hate , and some will freely post what an abomination the aftermarket triangle product is which doesnt require cutting for installation. It uses an adaptor similar to an ACE block, etc. to slip in and causes the folding hinge to exctend out the back of the reciever ...excuse while I shudder ;-) Ive never studied these closely but Im not sure if they have a mechanism for locking the foldewr in a closed position?

 

FWIW Id budget plenty of time to look through pics and various treads on multiple Saiga / AK sights before making any changes - or purchases

Check out Oleg's site in England; Rusmilitary, and Doug Ford in Texas has closed up shop but still has lots of incredibly beautiful and information threads about ALL thinks AK on his site; tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru [i think]

 

Also check the various FFL's and builders on this site for specific quotes & info

The last time I checked with Jim Fuller/Rifle Dynamics or Will/Red Stick they were at about $250 for that back end conversion.

 

A saiga conversion will give you a true russian gun but lots of people go the route of getting a Romy G or other parts kit and buying a new Nodak (or other) reciever [$100 or so] that already has the exact cuts made into it for the folder. Many consider these their Kyber Pass version AK

the DPH trunnions are soft

 

confirmed on theakforum.net

 

some have successfully heat treated them but you could buy the Russian 5.5mm trunnion on gunbroker for $160 then find a stock or wait for a deal to pop up

How soft? I have one in the wrapper still thats why I ask. I am not gonna use it if it will compromise my next build. Thanks.
