On FALs the type of receivers refers to lightening cuts that were eliminated from later receivers to save cost. There are some improvements in the original Type 2 design over the Type 1 as well.

I have FALs and M1As, I like both! Each design has its strengths, the FAL tipping toward reliability and ergonomics and the M14/M!A tipping toward accuracy.

I handled a DSA FAL at a gun shop yesterday and I believe that I have FALlen in love! :) I really liked the fit, finish and the ergos on that weapon. Seems lighter than the PTR91. They want $1500 for it. I am sort of considering trading in my Saiga 308 and a couple of other weapons and getting it. What I am really curious about is the accuracy. Will it out-shoot my S308, which seems to do about 2 MOA? Does it have a chromed barrel?

Id say do it. My dsa shoots 1.5 moa with match ammo and 2-3 moa with surplus. Great rifle, tough as nails and will eat surplus like nobodys business. The saiga .308 is a nice rifle, but it aint no FAL and never will be.

I have a chance to buy a used one at a local store.

Its a Century Imbel L1A1. Says "Imported by Century...." Has a thumbhole stock. From what I understand those are the old imports, from the early 90's.

If you flip the rifle upside down, with the bolt closed, and pull out the mag the serial # starts with UE A#####. Does this mean anything? Country of oregin?

Holding the rifle normally. When the bolt is closed and you look at the ejetor hole you can see the bolt has angled groves. No Flash hider of any kind.

Bore looks very good. Exterior has some minor surfice rust. Very minor spots around the front sight and one near the charging handle.

Could I replace it with a normal stock instead of the fugly thumbhole one?

Its on cosignment with 2 mags for $599. Should I buy or stay away from it?

NOTE: This is NOT the current L1A1 Century Sporter

Inch pattern kit on an Imbel so it will probably take metric mags, their cheap enough.

If you change stocks you might run into a 922r problem.

US made plastic stock sets are available, a new wood set is neighborhood - $285

6 bills seems high to me for a used rifle. I'd keep looking, but that's just me.
