GeorgiaPD 408
Yes, definately rest in peace. How many young 16 year olds now days would be willing to lie about their age to fight for their country. Not many at all from what I have seen. Times have really changed from then to now and not always for the better. Edited March 1, 2011 by GeorgiaPD
rocinante 100
I was rummaging through my grandmother's photos and found a photo of her father in his dough boy uniform. Also one of his wife. It kind of amazed me how pretty she was at 17 because she was always known as BIG MAMA by the time I hit the scene. One of the true bon a fide bad asses I have known joined the marines at 16 and did some pretty hairy island action in the pacific and fought in Korea. He bummed up his knee paratrooping and left the service. He spent most of the 60s fighting as mercenary in Africa. He claimed one of the characters in the book and movie The Wild Geese was based on him. Caught a bullet that went in his jaw behind his ear and exited his cheek a couple of inches to the right of his nose. Oddly it totally went along with his look and character. Kind of like one of those German dueling scars. Use to love to go to his favorite waterhole after work and listen to his stories. We all think of WWI as ancient history like the crusades or something but we are still sorting out things from its aftermath. Many of the problems in the Balkans and Middle East can be traced directly to decisions made after that war.
