NickWhite 7
How would I go about removing the S308 21" barrel? And when I put it on, what do I go about looking for to put it on right? And does "head space" have anything to do with it?
haugpatr 972
Yes, head spacing is very important, personally I would have a gunsmith do that kind of work. Why do you want to remove your barrel?
NickWhite 7
I gotta get the barrel to a gun smith to thread. But to thread it to 5-8/24 he's gotta get the barrel on a lathe to trim down the barrel diameter. So I gotta just give him the barrel by itself
Mephis 82
As long as you aren't going with a brand new barrel and having to headspace/drill it to be pinned, you won't have to worry too much about headspacing since it will have to go back to the same spot it came off. I've seen people pull barrels a lot of ways. Using an engine pulley puller is a pretty simple one. Just knock the pin out, clamp it down and screw the barrel out. To put it back in get a long length of fully threaded steel bar with brass washers at each end and tighten a nut down to draw it back into the trunnion. I know I'm being vague but it's very well documented and that should help point you in the right direction to look for details.
NickWhite 7
So since it's the same barrel I wouldn't have to worry about headspacing?
Mephis 82
To be 100% honest here, just legally covering my ass. Yes you do have to worry about headspacing. Use a field gauge. Would I be even concerned enough about it to test it with a gauge if it chambered alright and seemed fine? Hell no.
G O B 3,516
The head space is set, then the barrel pin is bored though the barrel. The head space will not change as long as the receiver and barrel are lined up so the pin will press in cleanly.
