  1. I believe that standard American manufactured ammunition by Winchester, Remington, Federal, etc (I can't say 'all' as there are probably exceptions) don't use enough steel in the manufacturing process to be magnetic. On the other hand, a lot of the mil surp does have enough steel in the jackets (and perhaps in the core in some examples) to be magnetic. The belief by ranges (at least to my understanding) is the concern of ricochet / sparking / fire and the concern of potential additional penetration to the baffle systems and traps put in place to prevent rounds from exiting the range versu
  2. I took my newly converted .308 and x39 to the range today for their maiden voyage. The range visit was primarily to shoot several handguns and this particular state regulated range wont allow any rounds that have 'magentic' bullets. So, with mil surp out, the shooting with the rifles was extremely limited as I only had one box for each of non magnetic American ammo. But, at least I could say I had a chance to shoot following completion of the projects. Big surprise here, both functioned perfectly. I was particularly interested in the .308 experience as I had not fired one before (conve
  3. Cabelas has Tula for $3.79 per box. Free shipping on orders of $150 or more (4th of July promo). 1000 rounds can be had for $189.50 shipped. I have purchased the bulk of my x39 from Cabelas as they very often have good deals. It is a plus that I am close to a store so I don't need to pay for shipping and use in store pickup. Of course, that is con as well as I seem to always buy 'something' else when I pick up the ammo! I am particularly fond of the various promotions I get where they give say $25 off of a $100 purchase. Doesn't happen often, but I seem to get that coupon in the
  4. On Point firearms has the 16" for $419 and the 21" for $483. Pretty good price on the 16".
  5. I have one from my x39 that I can drop in the mail. PM me your address and I would be happy to send it on its way.
  6. Seems to me that your reasons and the process for targeting the purchase a 5.45 Saiga have been deliberate and thorough. I don't think I would settle if that is what I really wanted. I think it would be something that would be regretted later. I myself have considered purchasing the 5.45 but just have not made the jump yet. Still funding restoration of two others. Classic Arms shows the 5.45 in stock at $339 if that helps.
  7. Great input and very much appreciated! I have decided to apply a small bead of JB on each side of the trigger and grind to fit to eliminate excessive lateral movement as I already have the G2. Depending on the outcome, I could eventually end up with the Dinzag drop in anyway, but it is primarily a time investment at this point. Doesn't appear that it needs very much material at all to firm up the lateral movement. I had noticed, but I am glad this feedback was provided. Regarding the selector itself, I plan to use in a standard AK selector to ensure better engagement. Thanks!
  8. I am finishing up my Saiga .308 restoration and wanted opinions from the forum. After adding a Tapco G2 trigger during this process (and removing the slight 'hump' on the hammer), I can definitely see where the safety selector on the .308 is just a bit short for ensuring the safety functions as intended. I know that Dinzag carries a drop in replacement to address, but am looking for alternatives. I did not attempt and didn't have a desire to retain the BHO on this rifle. Based on what I have read (experts, please correct), two other options exist as I understand it: 1) Replace exis
  9. I purchased my 16" .308 from on point for $424 within the past month.
  10. I just took delivery of a 16" .308. This rifle joins its brother, also a 16" but in x39. One item I thought was interesting is that the factory test for the .308 was 94mm while the x39 was 132mm. Not sure how meaningful this test is as I am not sure how they perform it. Both are in stock configuration at the moment, but as I have been reading for some time on the board, I may perform a restoration on the rifles at some point. This forum certainly provides a wealth of information on the rifles if I decide to head that route! I am exceptionally confident that I will have questions.
