  1. I bought a SCAR-L on Christmas and picked it up from my FFL yesterday. I will shoot it for the first time tomorrow AM. So it's not the first gun I will buy in 2012 but it will be the first gun I will shoot in the new year. My Saiga 12 will be there for the celebration too.
  2. When I was looking to purchase a 9mm I had narrowed my decision down to the Glock or the XDM too. I'd say you can't go wrong with either of these guns but, for me I chose the Glock. I shot both before I decide to purchase. I had no failures with either weapon during my trials. 500 rounds through each gun over 3-4 trips to the indoor range was not an exhaustive trial though. To me the Glock seemed to be a much lower profile (less clunky), and felt "smoother" when firing. My groupings were a little more tighter with the Glock than they were with the XDM.   3. Try GAT Guns in Dundee IL (pistol caliber only) or Article II Range / Gun World in Lombard IL (any caliber). I live in the Chicago area and frequent both to shoot pistols. If you want to shoot your Saiga 12 or AK, Article II is the place. Both offer basic pistol classes, NRA instructor training, CCW classes etc. I'm pretty sure the instructors also offer training for competition shooting.
  4. I live in DuPage County in IL. I purchased a new Saiga 12 in June, I was able to shoot the stock configuration at a range in Des Plaines which is in Cook County. I converted it with telescoping, folding stock, 12, round mag, quad rail, AFG fore grip and shark break muzzle break. I think I got all the bases covered on the CC Assault Weapons Ban list of no-no's. So no more shooting in Des Plaines (i.e Cook County).
