  1. Yes that sounds like it would work well. But I have two problems - the first is that they only allow 1 round in the gun at a time and the other is that I don't have a BHO on my gun. (It's on the list of mods to do...). Good to hear that I'm not the only nut trying to shoot trap with the Saiga.
  2. Thanks for clarifying that - makes sense now. So if I had a couple of mags with this mod and an assistant, I could just hand the mags back and forth as my assistant loaded them between shots. It might be cheaper to get another gun for trap, as someone mentioned.
  3. Yea, it may likely be the last time I do it at that range with the 1-round limit. Just thought it was a nice surprise that I did as well as I did with a "Russian Combat Shotgun"
  4. Hah. Yea, I actually already have a cheap pump gun and a cheap bolt action 20 ga. and a single shot break-open 410. Not as much fun as the Saiga though...
  5. Can you elaborate? To use the mag, I could just pop it off, load one round, then pop it back in, fire, then repeat. But that would be a lot more work (in CA where I have to use a Bullet Button) than just hand-loading directly into the chamber. Perhaps I'm missing something...?
  6. So I finally worked up the courage to try a couple rounds of trap today at the range. I've only put maybe 100 or 125 rounds through the S-12 since I acquired it a couple months back (and it had never been fired when I got it). Luckily its an early model and cycles pretty reliably even on the cheap Walmart stuff (I've had maybe 4 or 5 FTEs so far shooting from a loaded mag). Anyway, I was surprised to find that the Saiga was definitely not the limiting factor for me shooting trap (it was my skill). I've only done it twice in my life (today was the second time) and I shot a 10, 10 & 13
  7. I know nothing about modern optics (other than old school scopes) but wouldn't a miniature version also mean a miniature sight picture and more difficult target acquisition?
  8. Heck, most of us that live here don't understand it!
  9. Unfortunately, my understanding is that in CA I'll need a bullet button no matter what. Its not an Federal AWB "evil feature" thing - its a CA DOJ requirement that no automatic shotgun can have a "detachable" magazine. Here's a diagram of what I mean: (not posted directly because its pretty big) http://content.screencast.com/users/bpchristensen/folders/Snagit/media/c4e81e5e-bf04-4d1d-8273-413144d90ea1/2015-10-26_11-57-15.jpeg
  10. Thanks guys. Sounds like I'm narrowing down my v1 build parts list. I say "v1" because I'm sure it won't be 'perfect' enough the first time. Just need to decide on a CA legal (i. e. non-folding, non-collapsible, non-telescoping) butt stock and I should be ready to start ordering parts...

Is that the Tapco Intrafuse handgrip with the Magpul AGP? How do you like the combo?
  12. Reading a review online it sounds like someone had unspecified "issues" with mounting the AFG, but ended up happy with the setup, so I'm curious if this is a good setup, or if I might be better off with the smaller AFG2. I don't plan to use the side rail for anything, so obstructing it won't be an issue. Thanks
  13. The guns I usually bring aboard are made of wood and have rubber bands...
  14. Sounds great. Now I just have to find a gunsmith competent to do the work. And then get some more mags to make a round of trap more enjoyable. Which of course means I have to do a conversion first in order to use non-OEM mags... <sigh> :-)
  15. So I'm guessing that would involve reaming out and threading the inside of the barrel? Just out of curiosity, why the Rem-Choke rather than one of the others such as Win-Choke, True-Tube or Thin-Wall? Based on the available assortment of choke tubes, I'm assuming? thx
  16. So my boy and I brought the bone-stock Saiga-12 out for some familiarization and to see how it patterns with typical target loads. We're fortunate to have very nice gun club here that has three trap ranges and a skeet/sporting clays range. We set up a patterning board at one of the unused ranges and tested various loads at 10, 20, and 30 yards. Unfortunately the pictures I took of all the cardboard got accidently deleted (or never recorded - doh!) but I did write down my results, so I figured I'd share. 1999 year built gun with the 22.8" barrel (no threads, no external choke). The o
  17. Boating and shooting together in one thread - woohoo!
  18. Thanks again guys. and thanks for the clarification on CSS vs CSSpecs. Man, these S12 mags are spendy! But at least they are available; unlike good aftermarket mags for my Mini-30.....
  19. That is the most annoying thing about them. The Saiga specific Krebs safeties did not line up with the OE levers scratch marks on either of my Saigas (S12+7.62x39). The Krebs safeties on my Vepr's (The non Saiga specific model safeties) lined up perfectly. I wish I'd known this before I took the gun out and used it. It didn't have a scratch there yet until we took it out last weekend! Its probably faint enough now that I can still cover it with a bit of paint and it would never show...
  20. So I'm curious why someone would hate the BHO (just wondering what I'm not thinking about)? Are CSSspecs = mags from Carolina Shooter's Supply? (the 5, 8, 10, and 12) Can't use drums or >10rd mags in CA) With the Cobra or DPH, do they thread on to the original external threads? My barrel is not threaded at all (has an internal choke that is somewhere between Skeet and Improved Cylinder, according to a PM from another forum member) So I'm confused - you'd do the BHO modified safety but you throw away the factory ones? Is that because the notched safety modificatio
  21. Thanks guys! I see that Dinzag basically just modifies the original safety, but the Krebs unit appears to be a new unit? any difference between the two? By "serious use" I'm assuming you mean competition, which at this point I'm not planning on doing, so I'm figuring that
  22. Hey everyone, I've been lurking on the site for a few months now and figured I'd properly introduce myself. I recently brought home a Saiga-12 and my 16 year-old son and I took it to the range last weekend for the first time. It had literally been sitting in a case un-fired since originally purchased in 2000, so felt a little guilty actually using it (but that feeling went away quickly) :-) From the research I've done it looks like I got a very desirable 1999 model that has "Kalishnakov" written on the side (Port St. Lucie, FL). Apparently these early versions had much better QC than t
  23. Finally replying back to this topic, since I've installed the BB I referenced above and brought the S12 home to So Cal last week. Now that I have the S12 in my possession I can see that it does indeed have the rib above the gas tube (which looks almost like an optics rail). The front sight seems to be adjustable for elevation with a small thumbwheel. There is no threading on the barrel, and from the front face of the bolt to the end of the barrel, it looks to be a bit over 22" (maybe 22.5 or 22.8 inches). It is stamped with a "99" twice on the left side of the receiver - once in front
  24. Interesting. The one I have coming was imported in 2000 according to the paperwork and does not have a threaded barrel or rib on the barrel. It just has a front bead sight and the end of the forestock
