  1. Damn, that looks nasty. Blew right off.
  2. Three words guys. AWESOME, RELIABLE and ACCURATE. Yes, this rifle really is all three. Finally had a chance to shoot her and I was not disappointed at all. Started her off on American Eagle FMJ to sight her in, but she was dead on right out of the box. So after a few shots, I switched over to the Russian Ulyanovsk ammo and she stayed right on target. You would have thought that I was still shooting American ammo. No bad smells, smoke or loss of accuracy. It was great. I walked out all the way to the 75 yard marker and was still able to hit my printed 8.5 x 11 target rather easily from
  3. With all this discussion about forces and vectors I started to visualize a long rubber band. Like the kind that the cheap balsa airplanes had back when I was a kid. You would wind them up and the rubber band would twist and develop knots and distort significantly. Now try and picture a bullet pushed by 50K psi traveling down the rifling applying torsional force to the barrel. You would imagine that torsional force would act to compress the barrel somewhat (thousands to ten thousands of an inch). Now, the bullet leaves the barrel at which point you got 50K psi of pressure on the end of the
  4. Gonna go check that out in a while. Thanks for the tip. I've noticed that things are also coming back into the market. I can once again find AR uppers. Mostly M4's, which I'm not in the market for, but uppers non the less. Anyone know who has 20 inch complete A2's send me a shout out.
  5. Well, that's just odd. I can understand the man carrying the gun. It's his right. Nothing wrong with that. But then again, this is an event with the President attending. So.....for the sake of maintaining some sanity, perhaps he should have chosen not to carry that firearm. He can if he wants, and he did, but had that been me, I would have left it at home. I've worked with LEO's and FEDS in the past, and they don't like "situations". They like things to go as planned. Mess that up, and you got angry people. Angry people with more guns than you all focusing on you. To sum it up:
  6. Dare I say this.....try an AR-15. Only until you feel better. I will stress that again. Only until you feel better.
  7. That does not look like an Arsenal Saiga. Does is say Arsenal on the side?

  9. Finally took a picture of my SGL20 with my S223
  10. They probably thought you meant a full auto conversion which is illegal. You may be on to a possible point of interest. Maybe we should refer to the intended rifle modifications as "upgrades" instead of "conversions" when dealing with the uneducated public. That way they don't get confused. If they ask what you mean by "upgrade", then you tell them that you plan to switch out furniture, just like you do on an AR. Keep it simple and the simple minds won't get confused.
  11. Got an e-mail back from Arsenal regarding the firing pin spring (or lack of). They say that none of the Saiga 7.62 x 39 rifles are built with an FP spring. So that settles that. No big deal as mentioned before.
  12. Yeah, I've done some checking and they are all floating. That's fine. They seem to be a very light and low inertia pin, so I'm not worried about slam fires. Not only that, I always clean my rifles after I get back from the range, so crud in the pin should not be a problem either. I'm very happy with this rifle. Gotta go now, got a father-in law in the hospital that I got to go see.
  13. That looks about right. Maybe I'll order one just to compare it. Would it be necessary to ask the local smith to check headspace, or can a quick comparison with a micro caliper confirm that?
  14. Tell you what guys, I have a friend who is an engineer and has a machine shop over at his farm. If I see him this Sunday, I'll ask him to take a look at the firing pin, extractor and bolt. If anyone can replicate these parts, he can. If he can't, he may know someone else who can.
  15. What about asking Murray's Gunsmithing if he can make the parts we are looking for, and what he would charge to do so. He already makes the SKS parts, I imagine Saiga parts should be easy for for him to reproduce.
  16. Broker her down again during lunch and noticed one thing that immediately got my attention. No firing pin spring. Is this a hungover Russian on Monday morning mistake, or are the 7.62 x 39's not built with one? I've always admired the fact that both my 223 and 308 Saigas have firing pin springs as an added safety measure. I'm very surprised not to see them on the 7.62 x 39. Could you guys check your rifles for fp springs/no springs. I wonder if it's possible to install one like I did on my SKS?
  17. I'm excited! She really is nice looking and lightweight. Balance is perfect. Workmanship appears to be spot on. Hell, I even like the circle 10 mag she came with. Maybe I won't bother with steel mags after all. Everything is extremely tight. I had a little trouble removing the dust cover to inspect her insides. When compared to my other Saigas, this rifle appears to have parts that are a little cleaner (smoother) and of a slightly tighter tolerance. The bullet guide surprised me though. She protrudes outwards towards the mag. I didn't have a chance to cycle any rounds, but based on
  18. How much do you guys figure it would cost to machine a new bolt? Or extractor? I know guys who have access to 3-D fax machines that can basically scan and replicate any part. A bolt, extractor or firing pin should be no problem. I just don't know what it would cost to make such an item.
  19. Not a clone in my opinion for a few reasons: 1. came out of the same Russian factory where the various military AK variants for the Russian army are built. 2. Mr Kalashnikov works at this factory. 3. Back in 1996 Mr. Kalashnikov said that non-Russian and non-Izhmash built rifles were NOT AK's in his eyes. I figure whatever Mr. Kalashnikov says, should be the standard. He is after all, THE MAN. But I also don't consider Saigas AK's because lets face it, they are not. They are more like a brother to an AK. Same papa, and mama as the AK, but not an AK.
  20. Has anyone tried writing to Arsenal about spare bolts? They also import Saiga rifles.
  21. Ordered my SGL20-41 on Friday. Let's see when it arrives. Going to order some Bulgarian steel mags for it also. I don't have 100% faith in the Bulgarian waffles. Not only that, they twice the price of the Bulgy steel. Even though my SGL has not yet arrived, my brother is already whining that I should have bought another AR-15 upper instead. That the AR shoots much better and blah blah blah. I just tell him yeah, the AR is a great accurate gun, but the AK is the best go to gun out there. That's why I sleep with my Saiga 223 next to my bed at night, and not the AR. I just hope that the
  22. Okay. SGL20 it is. What mags do you recommend?
  23. Let me ask you this, how hard and expensive is it to convert a standard 7.62 x 39 Saiga up to SGL20 specs?
  24. The only reason I ask is because of the price. So without a doubt, you recommend the SGL20. Okay. That's what my wife says also. I just feel strange paying 850.00 for an AK with a non milled receiver. But if you guys say it's worth it, then I'll get one.
