I would just like to say that I got my hands on a Steyr M40 today, and wow...this thing shoots wonderfully. I'd have to say that it has the coolest sights I have ever seen(easiest to use as well). Any other folks out there with Steyr pistols?

I've shot them and love them. The bore-line is MUCH lower than most, and the sights are awesome. I just shy away from such a low trigger pul on a DAO gun with no external safety. It is a dream to shoot though. Very comparable to the Walther P99 but with a better pull, less recoil, and half the price.

actually, they do have an external safety. it's the little switch looking thing on the side that looks like the glock takedown switches. It's actually the quickest safety I've seen on a gun like this.

mseries-safety2.jpg pull the little switches down, and the button pops out of the top of the trigger area.

That's the safety?!?! I thought it was a trigger lock for which you needed a key to undo. Well damn, I wish I had known that...I might be rockin' a Steyr instead of my Sig. That's a neat little design.

I bought one thinking it would be the first of many pistols. For years I never got another pistol because I couldn't find one to better the Steyr except in one or two narrow ways.

Recently I finally picked up another pistol. My second Steyr M40.

So yes, there is someone else here who loves Steyrs. I personally prefer the older model due to the manual safety and smaller profile.

Count me in as well....M9 in my case...

shoots great, i just need more practice with it.....has an occaional FTE....but that is pretty rare.

i think i'm still gonna pick up an Taurus 24/7 in 9 before long as well....like the feel of that gun a lot as well.

i also keep thinking about a pair of cheap shit hi-points for the bug out bags.....ugly as sin, but reliable and better triggers than you would expect on an inexpensive gun.

I like the 24/7s too, from an armchair perspective. Considering getting a longslide 40 or 45.

9mm isn't my thing for several reasons, but in the words of Aquateen, "Some people like it."

given increasing ammo prices i'm trying to stick with the calibers i already have for the most part.....but i have considered the 24/7 in 40 or 45 as well.

too many guns to buy...too little funds....

I think I'm one of the few that couldn't warm up to my Steyr pistol. I had an M9. I bought it without even holding one because I couldn't find one locally and I couldn't resist the $250 price from CDNN.

The things that didn't work for me:

-Grip was kind of weird and slippery and didn't fit my hand very well.

-I could not get used to the trigger. No matter what I did I couldn't hold the gun consistantly still while squeezing the trigger. When it broke the gun would move ever so slightly. Maybe due to the grip not fitting.

-Sights didn't work for me. If I would've kept the gun I would've had PT night sights put on.

I put 700 rds through it and did have some FTEs, but that was only with CCI Blazer brass and probably also due to break-in. I had no probs with WWB. I ended up selling it on GB and breaking even.

BR,

You're right to each his own. I do prefer the SA trigger of a 1911 and will probably pick up a RIA Officer for CCW. What's weird is that I don't mind the Glock trigger compared to the Steyr where it seems everyone else is the opposite. I would've kept the Steyr in a heartbeat if it fit me. It seemed like a well-made quality gun. I have heard the triggers on 24/7s are bad.

I bought an M40 several years ago (believe it or not, the gun I'm holding in my avatar IS my M40 ... with an IGB carbine kit, optic mount and a cheap red dot). Its been a great pistol for me and my best shooting until I bought an S40.

The S40 I had was significantly easier to CCW and for some reason I shot it better than my M40.

Back in August my S40 was stolen and I just today found another one for sale and bought it (it'll be shipped out Tuesday so I should have it in my possession by end of week).

Great pistols. The S-A1 is supposed to be out soon (I've seen a couple of S9-A1s pop up for sale here and there, no .40s yet) and I'd really like the new version if it didn't have that stupid rail.

Accessory rails on a CCW piece seem silly to me.

Agreed... I cant think of any other pistol that I would rather have than my M40

IGB Carbine kit? Do tell more! Are you from the USA, or elsewhere? Never heard of one of those in the states.

I ordered the IGB Carbine kit from IGB in Austria, I live in Colorado. The kit consists of a 16" barrel and a real cool stock that mounts via the slot behind the magazine. I also have a scope mount designed for the proprietary rail on the M40 (mine's not an A1).

I got mine direct from IGB here http://www.impulsegunbarrels.com/

you can also get some the goodies here http://www.igbaustria.com/

And I got the optic mount from here http://www.mdwguns.com/ (and I would order any IGB stuff through him now. He wasn't their importer when I bought the carbine kit. Marc is a good guy to deal with too).

I paid about $400 for the carbine kit and $90 for the optic mount (a quick check of the above sites and it looks like the carbine kit will set you back about $465 now because of the Euro to US Dollar exchange rate, but the price on the optic mount has come down a little bit which makes up for the lower value of the dollar and will cost about the same).

Here's mine:

oooh, it's the Steyr branded one too :) If I was ambitious enough to get that kit, I don't think I'd ever shoot anything else.....You think if I practiced, I could shoot skeet with it? :P Nice kit though. you over at Steyrclub.com?

Actually its not Steyr branded. It has what looks like the Steyr Pistols logo, but it says Wilhelm Bubits instead of Steyr Pistols.

Wilhelm Bubits designed the M and sold it to Steyr and then designed the stock system and either sold it to Impulse Gun Barrels or its his company (not sure on that one).

Its a hoot to shoot, but I think it would shoot better with the pistol barrel (but I don't really want to drop $200 for the privilege).

And yes, I'm over on Steyrclub.com (I'm Zundfolge there too ... hell, I'm Zundfolge everywhere).

Well it looks like now is the time to buy an MA1 pistol (or any Steyr rifle for that matter).

Steyr Arms just liquidated their inventory, CDNN bought it all and are selling it off cheap!

M9A1 and M40A1 pistols will start out at $349 and whatever doesn't sell will likely drop to $299 in a month or so.

Downside is that Steyr may be pulling out of the US market :(

It's not no the list, but like was previously posted all the remaining undistributed M9A1 and M40A1's are at CDNN for $349. They will be in the upcoming catalog. I called them, and they have a bunch of them.

I already have a M9 and M40, but if they drop the price down to $299 like they say they might...I'm getting a couple more of the A1's.

FYI, I saw a M9A1 at a local gunshow today for $379.

I know a lot of people are worried that this sell off means that Steyr is in trouble and/or leaving the US market.

Well in interesting news, it looks like Steyr-Mannlicher GmbH & Co KG was sold today ... sold to a group of investors headed up by "the man that brought Starbucks to Austria" ... I'm thinking maybe this new owner will have a better idea how Marketing and the US Gun market work.

http://www.nachrichten.at/wirtschaft/513059 (news story in German)

basic gyst:

HEADLINE: Austrian Steyr Mannlicher Sold to Franz Holzschuh

DATELINE: Linz

BODY:

Wolfgang Fuerlinger, owner of Austrian firearm producer Steyr Mannlicher, has sold the company to management consultant Franz Holzschuh, it was reported on January 29, 2007. The 150-year old Steyr Mannlicher has 100 employees and generated about 11 mln euro ($14.2 mln) turnover in 2006. It has branches in the United States and Malaysia. Steyr Mannlicher produces hunting and sporting weapons under the brand Mannlicher and weapons for law enforcement under Steyr Arms.

Holzschuh has been active in international industry and trade. He was also responsible for the introduction of U.S. coffee shop chain Starbucks in Austria. The new owner of Steyr Mannlicher said the Austrian headquarters would be retained. Fuerlinger will withdraw from the company, but will be at disposal as a consultant.

I'm thinking at picking up an M40.

I read that someone said the grip is similar to a Walther P99. I've held one of these and it seemed to work well with my hands. I have to be picky because my hands are so tiny. Would you say the grips are larger or smaller than a Glock?
