If I'm going to convert my saiga is the tapco G-2 trigger really that much better than the stock trigger? Anyone feel strongly one way or another?

There is absolutely no comparison between them. Go for the G2 replacement along with a pistol grip conversion. You'll be amazed at the difference.

any G2 or FSE will be 100 times better than the stock trigger.

Polish it and the hammer at the contact points, pull will be silky smooth and light. TOTALLY worth the $33...

Can I keep my trigger group in the stock location? I like the rear mounted trigger and the Saiga Skeletonized Stock, but I want the US parts. Do the TAPCO single-hook just drop in, or do I need to mod the receiver?

The stock TAPCO will require moving the FCG assembly to the default AK location, that is, forward.

 

OTOH, BattleRifleG3, on here, has a modified TAPCO that will work in the "sporter" stock position.
