Galil 12 rd mags in a Saiga?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if the 308 Saiga can be modified to take Galil 12 rd mags? They seem to be a whole lot better than the junk plastic ones that you pay huge bucks for and probably last longer!

Guess you haven't tried the fuzzy bunny mags huh?

I think he is reffering to the Bunny mags.

What ever you want to call them....they are more handier to me in my short barrled Saiga. I can get lower in the prone position too. If anyone has been under fire...they know what getting low in the prone meens!

Now back to my question....does anyone know if it can or has been done? :smoke:

I modified the 12 round Galil mags to fit a stock (well as far as the mag is concerned) rifle.

I didn't mod the rifle to fit the mags.

Someone does just that though, Red Jacket IIRC.

I'll try to get some pics up of a modified mag and a stock galil mag so that the following make sense.

The Galil 308 mags need major 4 changes to fit the stock saiga magwell:

1. Grind down 1 thickness of the doublethick area at the front of the mag, you can leave about 3/4" at the bottom.

(ie the mag is too wide at the front, if you were to mod the rifle to fit the mags the trunnion would have to be opened up a bit to fit)

2. Grind down the top front to clear the trunnion, same as doing a Bulgy waffle for a 1/2 modified 223.

(ie the mag is too tall at the front, trunnion could be ground down, like the full military mag 223 Saiga mod)

3. Add a chunk of steel for a bullet ramp / front locking lug.

(I guess you could add a bullet guide in the rifle as on the 223 and 7.62x39 Saigas)

4. Grind off original catch at rear and weld on new one.

(your on your own as far as changing front and rear lugs on the rifle)

So, the mag conversion isn't easy.

To me, it's worth the trouble because I think the plastic mags look cheap on a rifle with nice wood.

I do agree that the galil mags are very high quality.

Nice pics! But can you show pics of the mag and describe what to do? I want to create a cheap (but more reliable) version of the SOCOM M-1A. This way if the GESTAPO confiscate(STEAL!!) it from me at a roadside CHECKPOINT like they have here in the "people's socialist utopia of NY", I won't be losing a $2000 rifle! Yet I'll have a nice, short, and powerful rifle that will get me home in a pinch if an LA riot or worse happens when I'm away from home. ( I know, I know....I should rely upon the Fatherland....er...excuse me....Homeland security to keep me safe and secure :ded: ....but....just incase they can't...I'll be able to!:devil::haha:
