Need help prioritizing what to buy

Recommended Posts

I just bought my S12 and expect to have it in my hands in the next few days. That was a large enough chunk of change. Now I'm looking to buy mags, folding stock/accessories, and a mag pouch.

I figure I can afford around $200 right now to blow on stuff.

I can either buy 3 surefire mags, and the stock. Or I can buy 4 mags. Or two mags and the stock and pouch.

What would be top on your list right now given the current state of affairs in our country?

Thanks!

if you're wanting to put a folding stock, you should buy all the parts to convert it properly, if not, a folding stock will simply get you into trouble

What do you mean "get you into trouble"? Legally or mechanically?

What is a "proper" convert?

Thanks!:)

a folding stock is about useless without a pistol grip, and if you put a folding stock and PG, then you have to be parts compliant, so you need to swap some parts to US made parts..... search the forum about conversions and you will learn....

you CAN mechanically just throw shit on there, but you could legally get into lots of trouble without the US made parts

Please tell me I'm horribly mistaken and it DOESN'T cost over $250 just to build a folding stock/pistol grip from Tromix...

It's going to cost $275 to do it the cheap but easy way (although nothing seems to be in stock right now). $190 the absolute cheap way and that doesn't include shipping on items.

Here is the wrong way to do a "conversion":

http://www.aceltdusa.com/SaigaAK.htm

To do a folder the "right way" you have to put this in the back of the receiver:

http://riflestocks.com/AKStampedModsRequired.htm

And attach the stock of your choice along with the folding mechanism.

http://riflestocks.com/catalog/product_inf...8b94ba4deb68e77

or folding mech with button:

http://riflestocks.com/catalog/product_inf...8b94ba4deb68e77

And as you can see the skeleton stocks cost about $65 to $85

http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/index.p...products_id=164

http://www.mississippiautoarms.com/index.p...products_id=167

and then you need the trigger guard and trigger group.

A folding stock for any other gun is $50-$100 tops with the exception of some very specialized sniper and AR stocks.

Why are Saiga stocks so obnoxiously expensive?

Thanks!

It's a niche market. Also, ACE makes some pretty nice stuff. Tapco makes cheap furniture for the Saiga, though I doubt highly it is as good. You can check with them.

ACE makes an external reciever block for the saiga, you can use that one w/out cutting off the tang.

More parts, better quality. $65 for ace stock, $35 for the block (which I'm guessing isn't needed in that other gun you are referring too), $65 for the folding mech. Keep in mind you are going to be subjecting these parts to the recoil of a 12 gauge.

If you want cheap & now go with the tapco folder, but you can tell just by looking at the pics it's not going to feel very good, or holdup very well hanging off of a 12 gauge.

I'm a firm believer that anything worth doing is worth doing right. Cost usually doesn't bother me...see my avatar for proof (plus it's got lasergrips ;) )... But a stock for $300+ Holy crap!! I think what I'll do is buy a part at a time to spread out the cost. And for now I'll just stick to a decent order of 12rd mags.

The two brands I see mentioned the most are Tromix and Ace. Is there a thread comparing the two? I'm really picky so I usually research the crap out of everything I buy.

Thanks!

Be honest though, you are asking for a folding stock to put on the back of a shotgun. If you just wanted a stock you'd have already ordered the $30 tapco AK stock, the $25 tapco trigger group, and the $15 Tapco AK grip...

Um...I only counted $165 for the stock itself, plus about $135 to do the other parts right.

It could be worse. You could be tricking out an AR with a MagPul PRS for $255 just for the stock. http://www.magpul.com/catalog/index.php?ma...products_id=193

Or you could get really spendy and put one of those on an ACE adapter block with AR adapter on your converted Saiga-308.

I built a Del-Ton lightweight AR. I've got an Aimpoint ML-2, TLR-1, etc. But when it comes to stock, the standard telescopic does the job perfectly. No need to blow a few hundred on one IMHO. Just my preferecnce though.

As far as the Tromix/Ace stocks....all of the appropriate harware is only $165? I saw more like $250-$300.

What other parts were you talking about?

Thanks!

Be honest about what though?

I was saying be honest in response to:

But a stock for $300+ Holy crap!!

It's more than just a stock. That covers the stock, grip, trigger group, DIY easy trigger guard, the block, and the expensive folding mech with the button.

I do want a top quality shoulder stock/pistol grip. That's why I said I'll buy it piece by piece.

Not a bad plan. Since all the good stuff appears to be back-ordered your best bet is to wait anyhow.

Personally, even with backorders (which give you a chance to gather more funds) I'd put money in magazines. A stock is nice, etc. But mags in the long term are inherently of more value, outside ammo. I'd get as many mags as possible, set some aside for usual target shooting and the rest keep bagged up for Iron Rations. Get your hands on 00buck and slugs (particularly slugs). Legislation can make slugs and 00buck LEO only, even with all the bitching of hunters and the like. Once the ball gets rolling it won't freeking stop. You may want to consider such things as additional springs for mags to rebuild or repair over the years, the same with the springs in all your firearms. When springs break, ya gotta have one and to get one for a firearm in the future may have a papertrail so long you could wrap your car in it. Remember we are dealing with socialists here. They don't like armed peasants.

What are Iron Rations?

As far as ammo... the bulk packs of Federal birshot/trap is what I've been and will continue to stock up on. It's the same price for $100 as 20rds of 00Buck and Slugs. I have about 50 rds of buck and slugs (each) but other than that, what brands of 00 and slugs are cheap but reliable and effective in S12's?

I'm partial to Wolf sealed tins...because they're sealed. I have a few thousand rounds of 7.62x39 as well as .223 and 9mm. Subsonic .22lr I have around 10,000rds of so I'll be able to eat bunnies and squirrels until freakin doomsday!!

I see your point with mags. I mean I'm still waiting to hear the first reviews of them before I sink $200 into 12rd. mags, but mags ARE more valuable because of their capability. My S12 will still be a great combat weapon and range toy without a folding stock. But with a 5rd mag it's not overly useful and definitely not as much fun!

Thanks!

Oh yea, not everyone knows "Iron Rations"...duh on my part! :D Iron Rations are the last ration of food to sustain you in a protracted fight (it now has become defined as encompassing the last mags, ammo, etc.) that you have to hopefully get you out of a real bind. Iron Rations is like walking away from a firebase under siege for two days and you have half of a mag left. That last mag was your iron ration. By habit I always have set back critical pieces of gear I never touch unless needed or cycled out of storage (like foods) because of spoilage.

The AGP 10 rnd mags have all had good reviews, especially the 2nd Gen. I prefer to have five 10 rnd mags in hand than wait for 12 rnd mags that because of politicians may really screw up the market. So far I've had no problem with AGP though. When the 12 rnd mags come online I'll have to give 'em a whirl. But the MD Arms drums....now that's a dream, unless someone comes up with a belt fed. Wouldn't that make some have a stroke! :D Just as a suggestion, keep an eye on the MD drums and save up for one. Those have a good chance to fall under any AWB ax, as will other mags. Heck, they will probably be a better investment than some other tangibles.

I was thinking the same thing last night about a belt-fed shotgun. You could seriously destroy vehicles among other things. I'm not talking about the videos of the guy shooting at a minivan with a full auto saiga...to destroy it that way would take a while.

As far as the drums, I know I'll be kicking myself in the future because I just can't afford them. However, I'd rather kick myself over that and HAVE 4 12rd. mags (48rds) than have a single 20rd. drum.

If they are still legal and not astronomically priced, my tax refund might go to a drum...

Thanks!
