Sarne 0
Has anyone removed the rear sight. I have been looking at it for about 1 hr and still see no way other than pressing down on that spring steel with a Vice and taking out the sight is this the best way? cvasqu03 21
Well, it's best performed as a two man job. One man pulls rearward while holding the rear "wings" of the sight, while another man with a hammer and a wide punch simply puches the front straight down sharply to compress the spring. This should be done fast to avoid it damaging the leaf spring. There is a way to do it one man style but you have to be careful. Place the rifle in a vice, then stand to one side and from the side, get a wide punch and place it at an angle against the front of the sight. The punch should be tilted toward the back, then quickly punch down on the punch with the hammer while continuing to push rearward with the punch. This way, you're compressing the leaf spring at the same time as you're pushing it rearward. The reason you have to be careful is that the sight will pop out and go flying rearward (similar to what can happen if you accidentally release the operating rod on an SKS). Make sure you have a clean paded area behind the rifle and don't let anyone stand there (this is why I told you to stand to the side). Whichever way you chose, I suggest wearing safety glasses. good luck.

cvasqu03 21
Awsome looking tool, finally someone thought up an easy way to do it. Too bad it's kind of pricey for a piece of metal. I sure could have used it though, I recently had to install/remove/change sights on an AK and two SKS's. Maybe I'll get one anyway just in case.
uzitiger 193
I used a C clamp and a screwdriver tip to press down the spring. I then twisted the rear sight out. I welded a rear sight on the rear of the top cover like the Galil and Valmet and used a pen laser to determine the hole location for the aperture. I then removed the factory rear sight. The peep sight is easier for me to shoot with and I have ten more inches of sight radius. I trimmed the sight ears to clear the Russian scope.
Onepoint 0
I made something similar to that, then about a week later, after a lot of trial and error and cussing I saw the tool for sale. Talk about reinventing the wheel, it would probably been worth just buying the dang thing for all the time and effort building one from scratch was.
