62 or 69 grain rounds (1:9 twist)

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

So I understand that most of our Saiga 223s have a twist of 1:9, which makes 75 and 77 grain rounds less advisable for distances over 100 yds. for twists slower than 1:7. I know 55 grain rounds are fine, my question is how do the 62 rounds stack up against the 69ers, which I have heard is the recommended upper limit for 1:9 barrels? Thanks for your input.

This page ( http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html ) says up to 73gr, but I would like to hear everyone's range experiences/opinions as well.

Also, I would like to know which loading delivers better accuracy and overall performance for you - .223 or 5.56?

I don't shoot brass-cased ammo in my Saiga. I bought it to shoot the cheaper steel stuff. Brown Bear 62 HP seems to shoot the best out of my 16 incher with Wolf 75 gr HP a reasonable second.

68 grain is the maximum ideal weight for a 1:9 twist rate barrel in .223 or 5.56. Accuracy starts to drop off after 68 grain.

A local store has 69gr, would that extra grain make a difference? And what's your take on how the 68 grain rounds compare to the 62s?

I was down at Sportsmans Guide (Clearance Store in Warehouse) and bought 200 rounds of the 75 gr Wolf for $5.99 each. I sure hope the .223's do ok with it. But, I don't think I would get to hung up on this Falcon. All my .223 Saiga's shoot so well, the AK is better suited to closer ranges and it may not be an issue. It ain't going to key hole at 75 to 90 yards!

A key hole shot would hurt - to the head! :ded:

I doubt it. The important thing is bullet length, not weight. Weight is just an easy way of comparing since the bullet weight is always listed.

Right. So in addition to weight, which load seems to give you better performance, .223 or 5.56?

And has anyone have any long-distance range results? Thanks.

Saigas have 5.56 compatible chambers so the 223/5.56 question is kinda irrelevant, IMO. Federal Match 69 grain would probably be one of the most accurate (and expensive) factory loads. Also, a longer barrel (21 inch) will stabilize the heavier bullet better (than a 16 inch) and be more accurate.
