8 round magazine to 5 round magazine

In the interest of using my saiga .308 for hunting, has anyone converted their 8 round magazines to 5 round magazines? I see the 8 round to 10 round conversion thread and the first thing that occurred to me is to add some wood/metal blocks under the follower. I am a little unsure if a wooden dowel will fracture and send bits of wood up the magazine. Has anyone found something lightweight like an aluminum piece that fits in there?

I took the magazine a part and put a few spent rounds under the follower. I'm working on a new follower that would replace the current one to make either 10 or 5s out of the factory magazine.

I took a couple pieaces of a pen tube cut to the right lenth and slid them over the pegs on the bottom of the follower
