AK Ammo Differences

Recommended Posts

My husband and I were talking about different types of ammo. His feelings summed up... if you hit it, x39 should penetrate all the way, even soft and hollow point. As such, whatever ammo is the cheapest is the way to go. He had bought some 154 grain Soft Point and we were pondering if a 18% increase in grain would equal the same increase in felt recoil, distance, accuracy, and wear/tear on the gun. We're kind of new to the AK world and it seems that SPs are supposed to expand and stop penetrating, HP are supposed shatter and stop penetrating, and FMJ is for when you just want to spear through whatever you're shooting at. That being said, it seems that more people would move to the 154 grain and larger/heavier ammo types. Did the AWB change that or why is the heavier grain stuff so hard to come by? Also, we were wondering about tracer, incendiary, and steel core. What grain are they and if anyone has comments on best kind to have for TEOTWAWKI versus normal hunting and HD, we'd appreciate any comments you have and/or care to share.

I don't know about the accuracy/felt recoil, etc, but I have read that the Wolf 154 gr SP is a good hunting round and the Wolf MC 124 gr HP does fragment making it good for HD. When a bullet is constructed so that it can fragment the speed of the bullet plays into how far out the bullet will reliably fragment. That may be the reason for the lighter projectile. The heavier bullet should penetrate better and retain energy better than the lighter ones. For TEOTWAWKI just make sure a priest blesses all of your ammo ahead of time and you should be GTG.
