The "lightening cuts" were what the Russian Army used to tell the difference in caliber! To the enlisted troops or uneducated all AK's look the same. They chose to use the groove in the stock to warn that the weapon was a 5.45 not a 7.62. So to be correct your beautiful stock should have the grooves. Cheers. I am finishing mine and would like to make one for myself but need some dimensions. Looking at pictures Dinzags it is flat on the front and pretty thick.
