FORKLIFT352 63
After reading some on the topic,I read that roll crimping offers better accuracy and a little more velocity. It is most often used for slugs but it can be used for buck shot as well. One would have to use an over shot card to keep it all together. Iv already pumped out some .410 on my MEC 600 Jr.for Dads Judge...and have dabbled on my other MEC for 12 ga. But if it is more beneficial to roll crimp then I will have to get tooled up for that. IndyArms 10,186
I think in the long run, a standard star crimp will suit you just as well, and simpler in the long run. Otherwise, all the shell manufacturers would roll crimp everything... Thats just MY take on it, though...
FORKLIFT352 63
Thank you for the help.I got a MEC 600 Jr.for the 12 ga.and I'm gathering components. I just read that roll crimping keeps a tighter group.I may expirament....
IndyArms 10,186
That may be so... but you also may find it is more of a headache for the small percentage of "group size improvement" you gain... It never hurts to check it out... just be sure to post pics, and range reports... you may steer someone else into a beneficial technique... or help to steer others away from one they certainly dont want to mess with and wont have to learn the hard way!! Twinsen 86
I'm not sure that the benefits outweigh the time and cost of roll crimping. You get perfect crimps doing it that way though.
FORKLIFT352 63
For skeet shooting and such I would definitely fold crimp. But if their is a marked improvement using roll crimp,(with 00,000 buck) I would like to stock up on the "good stuff" just in case the "need" arises. I got some side jobs coming up and then Ill get the tools for rolling. Hopefully by the end of the month I give a full report.
turbo1889 1
When you do get tooled up the roll crimp tool from Precision Reloading is cheaper and better then the roll crimp tool from Ballistic Products. Just run a search on the shotgunworld forum for "roll crimp tool" and you will see that's not just my opinion alone.
FORKLIFT352 63
Yes, that is the one Iv been looking at...but I did see one for 16.00 doing a google search. I ran out of buck shot and got some nickel plated coming soon. The roll tool will have to wait a little longer. 26.00 is way to much for a tool like that but what are you going to do? FORKLIFT352 63
Ok I got the nickel plated 00 buck today.Haven't shot any yet. I have the roll crimper and overshot cards on the way. A side note....with .410 in Winchester hulls and 00 (4ea.) Don't pattern well at all. However if you vibrate flower in between the 4 pellets causing a "buffered" load I've had good success. Now that i have the nickel plated shot I will try them buffered and unbuffered.
