Got bored on my day off, did what I had to, then decided to take some pics.

fal4.jpg

Top an STG-58 With a Izzy HB stock and Ironwood grip.

The lower is the Australian I just picked up.

I like it but i gotta score some wood for it.

Decent pic, not everything I got but enough to make it interesting. :)

Steel core

The cartridge case is copper washed steel, bullet weight 147 grain.

Velocities at about 2650 fps.

Earlier lots were corrosive, later lots dated after 1977 will be non-corrosive primed.

G3's didn't like it, FAL's adjust the gas open alittle more.

I scored that tin acouple months back for $130

That's 25 cents a round. :)

very nice, i am envious.

i am toying with an FAL purchase of some sort in the not to distant future, either an off the shelf model or a parts kit.

what does it take to build a parts kit, as far as tools go, is it something a person could do in their garage with standard tools?

it seems you could build one out of a parts kit for under $7-$800 (if not less) with a good upper receiver provided there are no special tools needed.

also, if its possible without smithing tools, what should i be on the look out for when shopping parts kits?

For parts kits I use either STG-58 or Imbel kit. You would want to start with the cleanest kit you can. A lot of the R1 kits from S. Afr were used hard and put up wet. Most of the world used metric rifles, so parts are more abundant than inch pattern.

Min.Tools, pro job with no skimping;

Action wrench with socket handle to torque the action to the barrel.

Barrel blocks to hold the barrel while you are torquing the action on.

A vise to hold the barrel in the blocks.

A metal lathe for turning the barrel to remove metal to allow you to get the proper timing.

Pin gages for determining the locking shoulder size for proper headspace.

Micrometer for verifying lathe work on the barrel.

WECSOG style;

drill press

triangle file

bench vice

blocks to hold the receiver

big adjustable wrench

dremel tool

thanks for the response. i think to have a right rifle, i would be best to pay a little extra and leave it up to the pros.

looks like it'll be a entry level DSA or a less expensive Enterprise/Imbel from Atlantic.

you guys can continue on with the porn pics now.

Nice FALs guys! :D

I prefer the StG kit! Funny, it is one of the rarest FALs in the world by numbers, and one of the most common here in the US! When Austria sold off their old arsenal, US buyers bought and imported most of them into the US. I would argue that in many ways they are superior to the Belgian FN produced variant!

I have three and of all my rifles they are my favorite! :D
