Saiga 7.62 vs 5.45

Recommended Posts

My dealer has a 7.62 for 320.00 and a 5.45 for 340.00

I am liking the 7.62 because I want to use the wind type 75rd ak drum in the future. Suggestions or comments on either? I called Academy and 7.62 ammo was 3$ cheaper.

5.45 ammo will be cheaper if you use the (corrosive) military surplus. However, you seem to prefer 7.62. Go with it.

No drums for the 5.45x39 to my knowledge here.

I have both. The 7.62x39 is my -150 yard rifle and the 5.45x39 is my -250 yard rifle. (shoots a lil' flatter)

1080 round tin for $150 of 5.45 vs. $199 for 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 (umm.. at J&G, Aim, Copes, Etc.. FACT)

5.45x39 Saiga's are currently SCARCE.. so you may want to grab one of those FIRST... IMHO.

My Saiga 7.62x39 was my first AK so its my MBR.. but the 5.45 is gaining ground on it.

Unless you are going to the shooting range, how do you know whether you will need to shoot 150 or 250 yards? ;-)

I like the 5.45 as more consistent at all distances in terminal performance than the .223 or 7.62x39. Better still would be the 308, but there you have issues with unwieldiness and ammo cost.

Jim,

I went with a simple Bushnell Red Dot on the 7.62x39 and 6x32 scope on the 5.45x39.

I figure the 7.62 was my DND rifle, and the 5.45 was for tacking :osama: zombie heads out to 250 yards.. 2 rifles and 2 uses.

With ammo costing less with the 5.45 the only downside is shooting IT twice as much.. :lolol:

The S308 is sweet temptation..... :cryss:

And... furthermore the 7.62x39 goes THRU most cover (aka bricks/walls) where as the 5.45x39 does NOT.. :haha:

That being said... i'd still grab the 5.45 to start off with.. you'll own ALL flavors within 3 years..

Jim.

I was giving that as an example.. somehere on the web is a long 15-20 min video showing all types of miltary rifles shooting a BRICK building and seeing how the ammo worked on the dummy's inside. Adn also inside walls and FLAK jackets on the dummies.

The .223 did NOT fair well at all. The AK 7.62x39 buzzed thru even at angles and hit the dummies. Though the 5.45 is probably tougher than the .223.. (as seen on here recently) I was going from the video.

It showed M60's also in action... WOW..
