what kind of steel is gastube end piece made from?

Longtime member/ seldom poster here. I did a search & could't find the answer & I am paying per minute to start this topic as I live so far out in the middle of nowhere that I don't have internet. I'm sure if I had the time to search more thoroughly I would find it but I'm in a jam here fellas & need the boards help.

 

I was removing the sight on my old Saiga with the dremel so I could install Camerons quadrail & I cut a bit to far down & bit into the top of the gastube end piece where the sight leaf rests on top. I need to put a little weld puddle in it to smooth out the nick. I need to know what type of metal this piece is made from so I can weld me a puddle in it & then smooth it out to get rid of the nick.

 

I was in a hurry & it was getting dark on me & my glasses were fogged with sweat. (this is my excuse for doing something so hamfisted & dumb) but I really need some help here.

its pot metal (really hard pot metal at that), dont do it, if you dont have to. use epoxy, is my advice, and color it, if its not really visible, or just paint it and say f it

It's carbon steel.

 

I've welded extensively on gas tubes and gas blocks.

 

If you feel comfortable welding and repairing, it's fine.

 

j b weld is fine also.
