deadeye956 4
I have always wanted the 5.45 AK74 in a side folder configuration. I would also like the privledge of owning a russian made weapon. I currently have a mak-90 which I like, but the Ak-74 is on my to do list. I like Saiga cause it has great feedback and it is Russian. I want a side folder and use regular mags. Can I do the conversion fairly simply? I have tools and have built an ar-15, so I do have a little bit of a mechanical mind set. I also want to have it threaded 1/2x28 for a Blackout flashider from AAC to quite things down. I was hoping for some links from your favorite vendors, pics of similar set ups and those of you who have suppressors on your 5.45 thanks!
nutical 16
If I have money and want a side folder russian 5.45, this will be it. http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=17658&cat=354&page=1 Doing one yourself is a little bit harder than put an AR15 together. deadeye956 4
First nice avatar, and you are probably going to hell, lol. On a serious note I found a place and a sponsor of this site. http://www.cadizgunworks.com/zcstore/ now to ask them some more questions..... What kind of options do i have for a forend handguard? I wanted to do a cheap ak-74 but my how time and money fly. toshbar 36
I have one with a Romanian side folding wire stock. what kind of side folder were you thinking? I think you'd have an easy time with the conversion. I did it my first time in about 40 minutes and could probably do another one in 20 min. Here's mine. Let me know if you have any questions. jamesavery22 54
+1 to toshbar's question. Exactly what do you want when you say "folder configuration?" Lot's of folding stocks for AK's out there. IMHO very few worth their weight other than the standard AK-74 or AK-100 series folder(Link that Nutical linked is an example). If you don't buy an Arsenal made Saiga(like Nutical's link) then the AK74 or AK100 folder is hard to come by. Either k-var: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=17651 or Gunbroker. If you want some other kind of stock make sure it's actually functional. If you can't get a cheek weld with the stock then the rifle might as well be a pistol. That goes for any wire style folding stock. The single-strut folding stock gives the weapon the feel of being strangely suspended in front of the shooter’s eye. http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/26/one-poor-choice-in-arming-the-afghans-and-its-repercussions/ As for forearm hand guards there are very very few setups that gain you anything over the standard lower heat shielded HG, lower HG retainer, and Ultimak setup. There are plenty that add bulk though... Edited November 18, 2010 by jamesavery22
deadeye956 4
i wasnt sure what was available for side folders, but i saw a folding colapsible stock with magpul moe. i like that set up, not traditional but whatever. i will look into the ultimak later. i am thinking this http://www.cadizgunworks.com/zcstore/ and add that stock from http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-650/Saiga-Magpul-MOE-Folding/Detail more money than i wanted to spend but oh well i really like that rifle. any other suggestions? thanks
jamesavery22 54
The last link you put is a bastardized setup. It's meant for unconverted Saiga's.
deadeye956 4
The last link you put is a bastardized setup. It's meant for unconverted Saiga's. Why is that? Do they redo the rivets? Would anyone know where I can buy a base model that also threads barrels? That would be perfect for me, cause I wanted to do a little bit of work to the gun. I called a place to thread but they are not yet set up, but in the process. Who knows how long they will take, and i wanted to save on having to ship it two different times. thanks i am still listening.
NM0 586
I like the Ace folder on my 5.45. The Romy wire folders seem to be a good deal, might have to try one.
sunnybean 939
The last link you put is a bastardized setup. It's meant for unconverted Saiga's. Why is that? Because it doesn't move the trigger forward..into it's proper place.
deadeye956 4
NMO what forearm is that, and if you dont mind how much was it? That thing is sweet. thread the barrel and i will buy it from you! ha ha
NM0 586
Thanks for the compliment. I recently replaced the FSB and have a Bulgy break on it now....runs like a dream. The forearm is a SGM I picked up at CSS. I had to trim it some for the Ultimak. http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-61/SAIGA-forearm-rifle-tri-dsh-rail/Detail
Klassy Kalashnikov 1,393
I've heard nothing but good things about the SGM tactical tri-rail that CSS sells. IMO it's the best tri-rail setup for rifles. Gives you three rails, low weight with no bulky/heavy metal, and has a very nice contoured grip surface.
NM0 586
I have an SGM on an S12 too. Been pleased with them so far. The one on the 5.45 was a little wobbly at the front end. I replaced one of the gas block pins with something longer and stuck a lock washer between the receiver and forearm at the rear...no wobble now.
deadeye956 4
Is it hard to add the grip adapter for a magpul moe, and where to buy? Thanks.

deadeye956 4
thanks for the help. after A bunch of searching i may just have cadiz gun works do the whole thing. thread barrel, tapco fcg, match trigger, weld and fill all holes. pistol grip adapter. new finish (not sure what they use, dura coat?) and have them weld in the folding stock adapter inside the reciever. it will be like NMO's sort of with a folding/colapsible stock with magpul ctr. and of course bullet guide. i wont mention price but it is close to what arsenal wants for their guns with fewer options than i am getting. cant wait to put my aac m42000 take some pics, but i wont have it for 1 or 2 months. i DO appreciate everyone's help. seems CGW is a good place and they are willing to upgrade the gun how i want it at a really fair price. plus i dont want to screw up my CAN do to my shotty gunsmithing. toshbar 36
I'd buy another saiga before I paid $300 for that thing.
deadeye956 4
Any particular reason, or you like me and want more guns? $300 is a lot of money but it does come with scope worth $200. i am thinking maybe the $125 option and add a primary arms red dot. that would be about $200. i use the PA on my 22 and think it would hold up on a 5.45 if it doesnt i know PA will fix it, they did in the past for me with NO hassle at all. I'd buy another saiga before I paid $300 for that thing.
deadeye956 4
Well I got it, it is a legion with dimples and a rectangle etching like someone else posted. NMO imitation is the best compliment, right? I will have a real close set up to you. I will use a dph stock instead and have a gas block/front sight block combo with a cut barrel and pinned AAC blackout compensator. No way to take pics but I will.
