Barrel Legnth and slug accuracy

Recommended Posts

I shoot a lot of slugs through my 19" BBL with surprising accuracy. 2 3/4" 1oz. Remington Sluggers seem to behave better than anything else. This shotgun has had many modifications: some for reliability and some just for personal preference. Right now it has a Tromix Monster Competition Muzzle Brake on it. The combination of a 19" BBL and that heavy brake makes this weapon very front heavy. For that reason I've considered a few options and all include shortening the gas system and BBL. Here's my question: should I expect the accuracy to change substantially if I shorten it down to where the BBL with the brake permanently attached is still long enough that I don't require a tax stamp? I realize that the gas system may not need shortening with this modification.

it will not make significant difference in accuracy. In the cases where barrel length makes a difference, it is generally due to a fall off in the velocity which would affect longer range accuracy more. A small change as you are describing will probably not be noticeable in normal shotgun ranges.

Last year at NC Recon, a 2 day 3-gun match, I took a FA S12 with a 13" barrel, which had one of Cobras choke adapters on it, with a modified choke tube. One of the stages was 6 shots with slugs at a 5 gal bucket set out at 80 or 90 yds.

3 shots standing, freehand, I got 1 hit.

2 shots kneeling, supported, I got 1 hit.

1 shot prone, I got 1 hit.

Sights were AK front, bent metal tab rear on the cover.
