Adding a wood handguard questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding adding wood furniture to my converted Saiga.

I am thinking of ordering the following wood furniture set for my Saiga:

http://ironwooddesigns.com/IWDsite/IWDNEWSaiga_2.html

I am wondering if I would be able to simply take off the current plastic handguard and simply put on the wood one that is part of the above set or if I need to make some other adjustment before I can do so?

My question/confused stems from the info on this link http://home.comcast.net/~navy87guy/home/saigaconversion.html in the "Handguard" section where it speaks about the Saiga not having a lower handguard retainer, unlike standards AKs, and so I'm not sure what all is required of me if I want to add the wood furniture set in the ironwooddesigns link that I posted above?

Anyone willing to help clarify things?

all you need to do is buy a bolt on lower handguard retainer and an ak gas tube that has the upper handguard retainers on it and you are good to go

+1 This is the easiest way to go. If you want an actual hand guard retainer you have to remove the front sight base and the gas block.

there are some examples, the lower handguard retainer can be had much cheaper but i cant post non business member links, just search around for saiga lower handguard retainers. some require you to file a notch in the barrel which is no big deal

CCS also has all the extras you need. Personally, I like the Timbersmith set alot better.

Ive seen a few posts on various forums discussing how the Tapco/Timbersmith wood furniture requires a fair amount of "fitting" ie, trimming of the wood. Not sure about which pieces or what make of guns the problems have occurred.

Id speak with Greg @ CSS to see what his experience has been with their stuff.

RE: Ironwood - nothing better IMO

great selection of woods, original weapon designs, and extra add-ons - worth any wait thats required

Good luck

Could you please post an example link of what it is that I need to get?

Try Saiga-AK.com I bought one of his retainers for my first conversion and it fits as tight as a factory retainer.
