Izhmash is developing AK-12 (2012) based on the existing mechanism with the following changes:

1) Hinged dust cover with picatinny rail just like 200 series, rail on the handguard as well

2) Selector/Safety switch on both sides (like in Galil)

3) Bolt handle on both sides

4) Reduced recoil (likely the same approach as in AK-107/108 or short piston)

5) 60-round magazine

The key points in the new re-design are to improve accuracy and allow one hand operation. Current;y AK-12 exists only as a mockup.

Per the article the idea of developing a completely new design has been scrapped due to the costs.

it only exists as a mock up? its not a space shuttle, you think the boss could go down to the workshop on wednesday and say , igor knock up an ak with hinged dust cover, ambi safty and bolt handle an one of those short piston thingys to soften recoil. get the apprentice to help as i want it done by the end of the week.

Why fix it, if it ain't broke???????????

91/30's and nagant revolvers ain't broke. But if I was a Russian soldier I'd be a little nervous if that's what I was handed.

Better Optic mounts are needed for the AK. and a railed top is the best way available now to do that. It's the future people. Even Russians want lower mounted high tech optics, less recoil, and better accuracy. It's a positive!!
