Ok, so time to show my complete ignorance about gun laws. I really want to go shooting, but am sick to death of outrageous range fees.

Is there anywhere one can safely and legally just go shoot nowadays?

Can I just wander into the woods with a cardboard target, check what's downrange, and go crazy if it's a good backstop?

Do I have to stay on private property with the owner's permission?

Where do people go hunting? Is that all on private land?

Any advice on this matter would be most appreciated, thanks!

I would say that as long as you have absolute permission from the landowner, and use some COMMON SENSE as to which direction, whats behind the shots downrange beyond the backstop, backstop itself... etc..etc...

YES... you can shoot legally...

we do around HERE all the time...

Here in West Virginia we have a wonderful thing called coal company property. Vast acres of private property that is pretty much used by anyone for everything. They also sell it real cheap after they're done with it. I bought 15 acres for $6000 a few years ago that was undermined in the 50s and had a capped gas well on it. I was offered another 75 acres that had been select cut for $350/acre but it was mostly hillside.

I also joined a real club and PA has free public ranges all over. I have all kinds of places here.
