  1. try dinzag http://www.dinzagarms.com/misc_parts/fcg.html
  2. +1 my gun had the same problem although the pin wasn't nearly as far down as shown in your picture. it looked like the drill bid just deformed some of the metal in the thinnest spot of the barrel and made a very tiny buldge just in front of the gas ports. i would have sent it back as it already was a two hole gun but since i was already partially through a conversion, i just fixed it myself.
  3. before retapping, try cleaning the threads with a brass wire brush to clean all the firing residue out. i'm testing a "custom" plug that wouldnt fit even though the threads are spec. turns out that crud from firing with the stock plug got in there and made it impossible to get the new plug in. i used a dremel with a tiny brass wire wheel.
  4. my two cents: i have a friend that has a 4 hole saiga and managed to bust 2 agp on gas setting 1 after a couple shots with 3" 15 pellet 00 buck mags. I have 2 hole vodka special that is in mid conversion and have not fired any mags through my agp yet so i can t say it wont break them. but, i have played with the agps in both saigas and i can say that his mags lock in tighter than mine. mags in my gun swing up into the latch and lock in with no resistance other than the latch itself. his mags swing up into the receiver and then expreience some additional resistance just before the latc

  7. im guessing that you wont see anywhere near the sammi max pressures that far down the barrel. of the several pressure/barrel length charts i have seen ('06 in hatchers notbook is one) the pressure for smokeless peaks while the bullet is fairly close to the chamber and drops exponentially as the volume behind the bullet increases. here are some pressure/time charts for rifles. remember that the bullet spends more time near the chamber so a pressure/barrel length chart would compress the peak to the left of the chart. http://ar15barrels.com/tech/pressure-time.gif http://www.shootingsof
  8. +1 i have my saiga pulled apart for a conversion and have observed this
  9. just started a conversion on mine. got the gun pulled apart but am waiting on parts and the thumbs up on on a sbs from big brother. as nalioth said, most of it has been easy except one stubborn pin in the gas block. are you in abq or elsewhere in the state?
  10. +1 - any gas port advice for us diy'ers chopping to the 10-12 inch range?
  11. tony, thanks for the info! i recently got a s12 and on the first trip to the range, every 2 3/4 shell was a fte. i remembered this thread and immediately reread it when i got home. sure enough, my s/n is in the range you stated and it is a two hole "vodka special". i cant imagine the amount of time you saved me if i had tried to find the problem myself. the dilemma now is to have it sent back raac or just do it myself. im thinking do it myself since i was planning on doing a tromix diy pistol grip, folding stock and 12"ish sbs conversion. since i would have to open up the holes anyw
  12. yeah, mine are mainly poly legend/mak types. thanks for the info. i didnt realize they made dot sights specifically for that mount. they still look a bit big and heavy compared to a docter style or similar dot site. decision, decisions, decisions just looking at the mount , it looks like three rivets will have to be removed. the first two will be holes that need to be welded but the last looks like it is attached to the rear trunion. might be more of a pita than it is worth if i have to re-rivet.
  13. got a new saiga 12 and going to convert it to pistol grip/folding stock/10"-12" sbs. none of the other ak i have have the optic mount on the receiver so i cant help but feel that there is a giant chunk of metal hanging off the side of my gun like a teen with a bad pimple. since im already converting it anyway (no nib/collectors value added), is there any real use for the mount? ill probably keep the bead sight or add a weaver rail/dot over the gas tube. dosent seem like id be having the need to throw on a nightforce, psl optic, or some such on a shotgun. any thoughts as to why i should ke
